EGR Valve or Something Else, Kid's car
Hi. Daughter has a 2008 Honda Fit with 225 miles and wants it to live forever. We've had engine light and a P2413 code. Wonder if it is the EGR valve and if we should tryin cleaning first or to just replace...or might it be the EGR passage way, or something else? Only symptom is the care needs to warm up for a minute or two or it may idle rought or stall, but otherwise seems to run just fine. Any thoughts to help out my kid.

It's not uncommon for the pintle in the EGR valve to get stuck due to carbon buildup, or it might be preventing it from closing fully. If you have suitable (thin) socket extensions it's not hard to remove, check, and clean with carb cleaner and a brush if necessary. You may be able to check the wiring, too.
The cold rough idle/stalling could certainly be related (if the EGR valve isn't closing fully - it will normally only open once the engine is warmed up), but is also a common symptom of valves being out of adjustment. |

I agree, most likely the symptoms are related to the trouble code, especially if the EGR valve is stuck open. The EGR passages between the intake and the cylinder head can also get carboned up, causing restricted and/or uneven flow. Also check that the MAP sensor is giving reasonable readings. Best of luck for your daughter's car!

Thanks again. Ordered and will replace EGR valve, and if not all good, will clean passageway (saw a video to clean pretty easy;). About an ok MAP sensor, is that something a code scanner would pick up or do I need a shop to check (again if all doesn’t seem well)? Been getting the CEL on and off for a long time, but now it stays on, still drives fine after warming up…but a bit of a pain, so thought I’d try to fix. Anyone with a good kid would understand. I just replaced the rusted bumper reinforcement for $125 too, so maybe she’ll make it to 300k. Be well.

Just a quick follow-up..I replaced the EGR valve a few days ago, pretty simple. All seemed (and may be) good, no engine light and started and ran fine. Now 4 days later my daughter said her car won't start. I'm going to check it out, but hope it's not a faulty EGR valve that I bought. Also the valve came with a metal gasket that I did use although there was no gasket there before. I know I'm over thinking this and its probably something else wrong with kid's car not starting. I'm going to check it out tomorrow...might even put the old and not so clean EGR valve back on just to check. But what do you think about the need for a gasket or not..and might that stop it from starting at all. I'm thinking it's something else altogether. Just grasping here for any thoughts.
