OEM Oil Filter On GD's

Has anyone had problems with the Honda OEM filters or any oil changes done by the dealership? I just found out the current 15400-PLM-A02 filters typically installed on our cars are made by Fram. After hearing about the Fram horror stories I'm a bit skeptical.

All I wanted to know is if anyone has had any type of problems using this filter or if people are just blowing this OEM filter made by Fram out of proportion.

They are made by Fram to Honda's specs. I have also heard the FRAM horror stories thus why I use the S2K honda filters.

IIRC Filtech no longer makes honda filters, just fram.

I just want to know if they're known problems, I'm about to put on the A02 filter tomorrow and I'm just worried about it. I bought Mobil1 full syn with it too. As long as there are no problems from dealerships or self installation i'm just gonna install it.

Super Mario Feb 13, 2009 01:55 AM

No problems. Used them all the time on my Civic. Think about it, the dealership still uses these on all of their Honda's, so if anything goes wrong we'd be the first to know! I've converted to Purolator Pure One filters for my oil change.

yea but the dealership also claimed and made me pay for the drain bolt which they were suppose to replace during my oil changes..they havent and it's almost stripped, thats how i know they didnt change it. :(

Super Mario Feb 13, 2009 02:31 AM

Were they supposed to replace it because it was stripped? Normally the dealers just put back the existing drain bolt. They don't give you a new one every time they change your oil. I've had to buy a new drain bolt before and it's only a couple of bucks.

I just found out that College Hills sells the A01 Filters. I might just have to pick some up from them.

I have whole case of OEM oil filter and they are made by Honeywell........

doctordoom Feb 13, 2009 03:03 AM

even if fram oil filters are subpar in quality, as long as you perform maintenance at the regular intervals you won't have any problems.

cab0053 Feb 13, 2009 02:03 PM

what are the fram horror stories? explosions? leaking? failing off?

Tofuman Feb 13, 2009 02:17 PM

Hamp and Wix oil filters are top notch. But I use K&N mainly because of the nut on the end. It make is so much easier to remove.

Exactly, oil and the filter are really a non issue if you change them every 3k or 5k at least. All the additives and super blocking filters do is just extend the amount of time between intervals for lazy people. The cheap fram stuff may be garbage but the higher end stuff is fine. We used Fram racing spec filters on our koni challenge car.

Ive used the OEM honda filter for 5 years on every honda ive owned with no issues

Continuing your thought
......Which makes Fram and this is why some people are afraid of them.

I have never seen any conclusive controlled testing that shows Fram is any better or worse than any other main line filter brand. I have seen the cut open filter pictures and the anecdotal claims, but nothing firm. I would like to see some tests if anyone know of any from an actual lab.

YA2_user_GD3 Feb 15, 2009 01:27 AM

from that bob oil site, apparently they've run oil analysis. I had to tear up the OEM filter to take it off and i got a peek inside, looks pretty basic like fram's... uh-oh.

kylerwho Feb 15, 2009 02:22 AM

all companies have horror stories behind them. i had a few (not one but a couple) of bad fram oil filters that spit weird cloth pieces into my oil on my old subaru. i contacted fram about it and they said it was a manufacting defect and replaced the part for me. :)

im sure honda holds fram up to a higher par of workmanship but all companies have their ups and downs with products.

Darkstars Feb 15, 2009 10:50 AM

I always go to Honda and get an OEM filter and drain plug gasket and Mobil 1 5w20 from my work
