Which Code Reader Do I Buy?
 

Until I get to Harbor Freight or Snap-on, my choices are limited to four code readers that are on the shelf at Pep Boys.

Innova offers two readers, one at $200 and one at $90.

Actron also offers two readers, one at $140 and one at $90.

I just need a clue here. I just need something that is not a total waste of money that will work well enough for the time being.

If all you want to do is read engine codes and look them up in a book or on the Internet just about any cheap reader will do. If you want to read ABS and air bag codes then you need to look for those features.

Another thought is a scan gauge which you leave attached and watch various parameters that you select as you drive. I have a cheapie code reader around here that I seldom use, and I have scan gauge that I use all the time. I move it occasionally between my vehicles as I want it. I primarily use it on my Colorado but occasionally move it to my Blazer, my wife's Jimmy, and the Honda.

You really need to decide what you want it for and then buy one from there.

Harbor Freight Freight does have one that does ABS. The only time I needed the air bag reader (Supplementary Restraint) codes, I borrowed one from a friend's foreign car shop. That failure turned out to be a bad clock spring. ABS errors are a little more common and you might want it.

So decide what you really want / need and go after that one. Verify that it will read the codes on your type of vehicles. Some do not read all of the proprietary codes on various vehicle brands.

I have a scan gauge that I just attached to the front legt corner pocked of my fit. I have had two codes pop up and I just used the book to identify them.

I also have it set as a gauge for ignition timing, water temp, intake air temp, and mpg.

If a cheapo unit will do the job, I might pick one up just to have it and fiddle around with it.

I forgot about Scan Gauge. I first became aware of them when I bought the Fit, but I forgot that they can read codes. I might give that some serious thought, esp. if I can use it in all my cars.

There are other units available besides the Scangauge. One is Ultragauge, another is the Garmin EcoRouteHD. There are apps for smartphones as well, tho' you must buy the bluetooth dongle that plugs in.

This is what I personally have, it reads OBDI (comes with connectors/adapters) and OBDII. Saved 120 bucks getting it from Amazon opposed to getting it at Sears.
