Strange voltage issue

Hey guys. So the wife called me and said when she turned on our 2007 fit sport the battery light came in and stayed on. It stayed on for a while and once she jumped on the highway it turned off. My immediate thought was an alternator since the battery is 2 to three years old tops direct from the dealer. When I got home I check battery voltage with the car off and it was 12 volts as expected. When I turned it on and put the meter on it and it got up to 15 to 16 volts. I did not think it should be that high. Also the light has not turned back on since. Not sure if I should still change the alternator. Any ideas?

thanks

Check for the stored codes to rule out ELD system (it stores code but does not tun CEL on) My guess is that the voltage regulator failed inside of the alternator.

I went ahead and bought an alternator I'm going to replace it tomorrow

Did you get the alternator tested? Most parts stores do it for free.

Same thing happened to me, literally 2 days ago. Thought it was the alternator. Going to get it tested today. Good luck, keep us posted!

Btw, are you on the original alternator?

Over charging fit 2008

Has the problem of overcharging been solved after replacing the alternator?
I currently have a similar problem where the steering wheel light flashes and the lights dim and the voltage rises to 16 and even to 18

A faulty alternator can certainly over charge (usually due to the regulator failing). Best to bring it somewhere to test to confirm the alternator is the issue.
