A really dumb question on exhaust?

So I am looking at SK2 or Tanabe to replace my stock exhaust.

My understanding is that it will increase HP by 1-3 :rotfl:, so replacing the stock one will only give different “sound”.

Why do I want to spend $250+ on a brand name vs. a no name one from Ebay (less than $50)? Does it really make that much different? Or is it a Rolex vs. Casio watch? Both can tell time but one cost 100X more.

Thanks.

generally, you're paying for quality. using your logic, a rolex will tell time/date/temp just like a casio but the rolex is constructed better with better materials and will retain its value. most even increase in value.

a $50 ebay muffler is cheap because corners need to be cut to manufacture it and sell at a lower price: poor welds, steel wool as the muffler packing material, and cheap labor from china all attribute to that $50 price tag.

btw, good choice with the s2k muffler. i think it looks dope when it's fitted right and has just the right pipe diameter for the gd/ge. you may also consider an fa/fg muffler, those look and sound great too.

and of course any $50 muffler you find is going to need to be welded on. which means paying someone to do that. so consider that too. probably wouldn't cost you much at all so you'd still be cheaper than most on the market. but the nice expensive ones are made specifically for your car, so you can simply unbolt the stock exhaust and attach the new one. takes 10 min and you're ready to go. all that plus what wagoon said. :)

Thanks for the postings brothers.

Where would be a good place to pick up (or mail order) a S2K?

Looking for the best price (probably online)?

Many thanks again in advance! :)

S2k is a car ;). I'm assuming you're talking about Skunk2. As far as I can find SK2 only makes a full cat-back system for the GD, not GE (I don't know what you're driving). If you're looking at just getting one of their universal mufflers keep in mind you'll still need to have it welded on at a shop.

Make sure to post pics and a sound clip if possible if you get it tho, I'd like to hear what the Skunk2 sounds like!

Wait! I thought that the SK2 would be a easy install (minimum tools and a can of WD40)?

Looks like I may go with the Tanabe or HKS.

By the way – my FIT is a 09, so is a GE.

Thanks again.

Yeah no problem. From what I can find on Skunk2's website and google, the only bolt-on product they make for the Fit is for the 07-08 GD, and it's a full cat-back system. Nothing listed for 09+ GEs.

Sorry for the late post.

So I bought the Tanabe Medallion concept G, took less than 30 minutes to install (much easier if install by 2 people). :D

Here are a few photos:
