Project Setrab ATF (Transmission ) Cooler

I am very happy with my Setrab ENGINE Oil Cooler so I decide to use Setrab again for my ATF (Transmission) Cooler.

Here are the DIY:

First I need to determine which hose that is connect to the stock radiator is the cool side,
and I found out the hose next to the radiator flush spigot is the cool line:

I choose this Setrab model because the slim shape and low pressure drop:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...012531d920.jpg

I bought the Setrab along with the Mocal mounting bracket and other part for proper mounting below:

I also took this opportunity to really flush (multiple flush) the ATF and change the ATF filter again (this is second time I change the ATF filter since I owned this car) so I bought this parts from Honda dealer:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...f03067ab2b.jpg

I also make harness for the VEI Dual Oil Pressure and Temperature Gauge and run it through the main grommet (I did this few weeks ago when I install my 1in brake master cylinder and it's booster), I also start my first ATF flush at the same time and replace the ATF filter:

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...f0a11704a1.jpg

Then the following weeks, I start fabricating the bracket, first opening the upper carbon fiber cover:

here is how it looks before Setrab ATF oil cooler:https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...ccddf61c7a.jpg

Fabricating the bracket (test fit):

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...249735c0da.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...e942a87c2c.jpg

Took out theoriginal hose from radiator and do the second ATF flush:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...b7ad42ed3f.jpg

Assembling all the hose (using Earl's Super Stock hose) and I found out that Earl's super stock hose (despite it say 3/8" size) is too small to fit onto the Honda Radiator pipe,...

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...fefcc25224.jpg

So... I need to delayed installing the Setrab ATF cooler because I need to buy more parts... I bought the stock Honda hose (which is 3/8") and buy AN to 3/8 barb adapter (Russell):

Finally this weekend, I have all the parts and I installed everything, including the VEI Systems Oil Pressure and Temp sensor:

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...5f1598db63.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...bb115830b4.jpg

Oh, I always apply Setrab oil to prevent seize and also use proper Earl's AN aluminum wrench to prevent scratch:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...620b30c5a8.jpg

I cut the original Honda hose and use it as (adaptor) so it can fit Honda stock radiator inlet:

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...cff71ad2e3.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...d457cbaecc.jpg

Use Setrab Machined hose clamp to hold and space the two hose:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...37117da32e.jpg

I also paint all the bracket black so it won't stand out if we look from the grille:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...3624c86cd1.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...707277e3db.jpg

Then I soldered and connect the 3 wire (one ground) for the Pressure sensor and 1 wire for the temp sensor (ring terminal), and this conclude the install.
Next week, I will install the VEI gauge (interior), it is already very late and Iam too tired to install the VEI gauge now. (oh, i also do the third ATF flush today, so my ATF should be very clean now).

I installed the VEI Systems Dual Gauge today, here are the details:

I had a local upholstery shop cover the Gauge Pod with Leather and Yellow Stitching to match my other gauge pod, but I need to enlarge the gauge 52mm opening so it will fit the VEI Systems gauge. (the opening were not covered with leather too, enough to reduce the diameter of the hole):

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...3d4a27cc50.jpg

I connect the wiring for the gauge (power supply, light dimmer trigger, connection to sensor etc.) and turn it on to make sure everything is working:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...4f7464e6a6.jpg

I epoxy the plastic attachement because this part is the only area that hold the entire gauge and it is very prone to broke from my previous experience:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...5d15e83a1c.jpg

I cover the wiring with wiring loom to protect them:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...3a9ea00900.jpgI

I mount the gauge to the lower dashboard panel cover through the opening and secure it with a plate (covered with yellow shrink wrap):

Turn on the engine and check to make sure the gauge read the pressue and temperature:

With this, I declared the Project ATF Cooler Finished :D:vtec:

I Continue to love the attention to detail in your posts. I feel like I am watching spoon sports tech describe to me something very involved yet without clear reason for doing it beyond "make car better." Many of them have been very helpful to me.

What is the point of atf cooler?

What is the point of atf cooler?

Hello Fujisawa, Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it :)
The reason why I install the ATF cooler is because when I drive my car up a mountain/hill, the engine temperature will shoot up to over 100 Celcius. The car do not over heat but it is really close to a point that it might over heat.
The current stock engine radiator (for car with AT Transmission) also have to act as ATF cooler (the AT fluid is routed through the engine radiator). I suspect (actually I mean I know for sure) the extra heat from the Automatic Transmission going uphill also contribute to the extra heat the stock engine radiator need to release to the air.

I was interested in installing the racing radiator from Koyo for Honda CR-Z, but turn out it is for manual version so it does not have cooling section to cool the ATF, which mean I need to install a totally separate large ATF cooler, but the problem is, when the weather is cool (winter), the AT fluid will not get warmed up by the heat from the engine so this is not good.

The only other alternative is to install this extra ATF cooler in parallel after the ATF cooler in the stock engine radiator like I did now, so the ATF will get warmed up fast to it's normal operating temperature, but the extra oil cooler will help maintain the temperature from going to high.

I notice lower engine temperature when climbing up the hill, and it is harder for the temp gauge to creep up during the climb after I install this Setrab ATF cooler :)
