Lowe's Door Handle Screw Cap Mod

You can find these in the specialty parts drawers in the hardware department at home improvement stores. The ones I found were from Lowe's and were about 40 cents a pair in black. Attachment 26504 You will need to drill out the back of the cap to a little larger than 3/16" with a drill bit, and then ream it out with a knife or something to make it a little bigger. Take a test screw out of the car beforehand to make sure each fits. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...-and-Screw.jpg Be careful to not break the tabs when the thing is spinning in your hand. I broke several, and bought backups since I've used these before and thought it could be an issue. Use pliers to hold it, and drill against a box or something. Sounds easy, but these things are small and easy to mar. Once done, tighten the screws into each cap in the door until you can get it to snap closed. I had to tighten them down til I almost couldn't turn the screw anymore before this would happen. Tight fit, but once they snap on, it's secure and shouldn't pop off. The hinge will catch it if they do. They look factory in color. Makes our "cheap" interiors look a little more well thought out. Enjoy! :D |
That's awesome. I'll be doing this for sure.

wow, something so simple yet makes it look so much better. I'll be doing this for sure.
|
Lol. Ive never realized that screw was there. Doesn't bother me that much for a trip to Lowes.
|
Awesome! :-D
|
Thanks Hayden for doing this. I'll be doing it too. The devil is in the details...
|
Nice find! Thanks for sharing

I was able to find them online, for those that don't want to make the trip to the store..

For those who have an xacto knife, I found it was easier to just expand the hole with the knife than to drill it. If you go to Home Depot, the correct cap is the #6 one as well.
|
#6, cool. Next time I gotta pick up supplies, I'm going to make a quick stop to the screw aisle.
Great mod hayden, like I told you in the other thread. Really cleans/finished off the look. :vtec: |

I did this this afternoon. Anyone else who tries this, don't worry if the tab holding the cap on snaps, its easy to trim off the tab & the cover will still snap on. Just be carefull to catch it if you have to pop it off to get to the screw!

I use some channel lock pliers, they worked well but codger is right if it snaps the caps still work.

The only thing I would warn about is that (at least at Home Depot) these are sold in three packs, but you have four doors to do! D'oh! |
Its always good to have spares!

While the screw is out take the panels off and replace the material. The caps will go well with the new black coverings.

wow, that is super detailing

I did mine yesterday. It finishes off my black door material.
I just used drill bit in my hand to ream out the holes. Used a smaller bit followed by a larger one. How many times have I had those screws out doing the material and winkers? |
