My Recaro Project

6 Attachment(s)
Ok, since my Sprintex project is nearing completion and I still need to wait for parts/tools to finished it,

I jump a bit and start my Recaro Project.

I had been planning to install a pair of Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby for my car since long long long time ago.

I am still saving the money needed to buy the Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby but I had bought most of the needed parts to make most of the Airbag system still work (except the side airbag on the seat itself).

I start (last year) by buying 3 Recaro Honda Access (Modulo) seat rail for JDM Honda Fit.
They are the same as the Recaro seat rail since the Honda Access (Modulo) one also made by Recaro but funny thing is, it is cheaper to buy the Honda Access (Modulo) one than buying directly from Recaro.

Why 3 Recaro seat rail?
because I need to buy 2 Left Side Rail and 1 Passenger Side Rail since I will canibalize the seat belt anchor from the left side rail and move it to the right side (passenger side rail). The JDM Recaro Rail on the right/passenger side don't come with seat belt anchor.

Here they are:

I even bought the Recaro seat belt cover, eventhough I won't install it now hahaha:)

Early this year,
I also bought a USED USDM Honda Fit Passenger side seat
from on of Fitfreak member. it have all the wiring, OPDS and weight sensor
plus the ECU and Airbag included at very friendly price :)

https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/atta...ine=1468180178

I start do tear apart the seat today, it is really a pain to tear it apart,
Lots of clip that hold the fabric and lots of wire clip that I need to unclip:

The Airbag module and ECU module:
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/atta...ine=1468180178

https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/atta...ine=1468180178

Here are the upper foam that contain lot's of sensor that I need to separate from the foam later:
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/atta...ine=1468180178

The Lower Frame after I remove the bottom foam:https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/atta...ine=1468180178

I want to remove Four Weight Sensor (Load Cell) and move it later to the Recaro seat rail so it can detect if there is someone sitting on the seat so the passenger front airbag can work, and this is one of the load cell:
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/atta...ine=1468180178

Problem is, Honda use a very weird kind of nuts and I need to find the right socket or just use something someway to open it:

Next update probably months away,

I still need to buy:
a. Torx socket to disassemble the Load Cells
b. Resistors to trick the ECU into seeing the side seat airbag still connected
c. Pairs of Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby

Once I had those two above then I can start assembling all the sensor into the Recaro Seat Rail,
and install the seat.

BMW ALPINA 08-15-2016 04:55 PM

Purchase some special Torx tools to disassemble stock passenger seat rail Load Sensor and move it to Recaro Rails...

BMW ALPINA 11-25-2017 11:02 PM

I had been a while since I am making progress on this project...

Today I decided to take out the Load Cell (Weight Sensor) on the stock passenger Honda Fit seat and turn out I realized that Honda Fit seat design is totally different than the Honda CR-Z weight sensor design...
so the lesson learn from Item-9 at CRZforum can NOT be applied in our case...
but... I found a different solution anyway :D

Here are some pictures of me disassembling the 2 rear weight sensor...
the 2 front weight sensor is still stuck on the Honda seat rail... I might have to destroy the seat rail to extract it... will do it later...

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...e96f17ff8f.jpg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...94c8947dc5.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...189391a233.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...b624452f1b.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...237ae730aa.jpg

So basically what I will is to reuse all the leg from Honda OEM seat rail,
than bolted the weight sensor upside down on the leg and then bolted on to the Recaro Rail...
I also need to take out the rivet that currently hold the leg of the recaro rail since they are too high and replace them with Honda OEM seat rail (much shorter) but after adding the weight sensor, the weight will be the same again as original Honda OEM seat height.
This means I have plenty of space below the Recaro for Pioneer under seat subwoofer or even Alpine one...

Keep it up!

Chantastic 08-24-2018 01:56 AM

Thanks for making this thread! Did you end up cutting off the Honda leg and attaching it to the Recaro rail?

I might have to do this soon. I'm hoping to find a smaller Torx set that isn't as expensive but has what is needed to disassemble the seat.

Hello, I have not done anything since my last post because I have not bought the Recaro seat yet hahaha. I know ... this is the longest project I ever had that is not finished...
I was about to buy the recaro's but then the budget got diverted to my audio system... hopefully I can buy this in 6 months from now after I move to a new city...

and hopefully before ASM stop producing the SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby...

Chantastic 08-25-2018 01:24 AM

Looking forward to seeing them when you get them. Thanks!

BMW ALPINA 06-17-2019 02:03 AM

Finally after years of delay, I ordered (and paid) for a PAIR of Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby with the matching ASM Shoulder Cover Ruby a few minutes ago :D
I can't wait for them to arrive here :vtec::p

Chantastic 06-19-2019 02:20 PM

Awesome news! Can't wait to see them.

I ended up buying civic Si seats to replace my Recaro's and am working through the airbags. I lived the Recaro's, however there is no quick tilt/recline function, and I use my Fit like a work truck o's it really slowed me down. I also felt bad for hitting the plastic backings with pieces of wood. Hopefully I can get the airbags working this time! I will sell the Recaro's and rails now, sadly.

Thanks Chantastic, My Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby seats are scheduled to arrive tomorrow and I will post picture once it arrived.
By the way, my buyer in Japan informed me that my 2 seats were store display model because they were the LAST 2 available Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby available (although they still have about 30 units of the SR-7F (FLAT base model) in stock)
and ASM just announced about the out of stock and out of production of the Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby today, below is the link to ASM announcement:

https://autobacs-asm.com/blog/recaro...s_view&no=3744

I am glad that I order them right on time before they stopped production... I mean after 6 years of dreaming, I almost let my dream get away https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/imag...ies/tongue.gif

I might not be the first people in the US to own a pair of Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby, but as compensation, I become the HAPPY owner of the LAST 2 Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby available in the world https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/imag...es/biggrin.gif

Chantastic 06-28-2019 01:42 AM

Great timing! A few more days and your six year wait may have been for nothing! I am installing my Civic Si seats tomorrow. Goodbye Recaro :(

BMW ALPINA 07-01-2019 10:04 PM

After delay with Custom Clearance, My Recaro SR-7 ASM Limited Ruby arrived today :D

The boxes:

The seats look much better in real life than in picture because the picture fail to show how BLACK is the color of ALCANTARA and how it match the center part of the seat (which is still black in real world but look a bit gray in picture):

BMW ALPINA 07-06-2019 04:43 PM

I install the Driver Side Seat yesterday, I have not install the passenger seat since it will require much more works/modification to the seat rail and retrofitting sensors to the Recaro. Hopefully I can do the passenger one in the next 2 weeks.

Here are pictures and step for Driver Side Seat:

Use the 2 spacers per bolt to mount the Recaro SR-7 ASM LImited Ruby to my Honda Access OEM Recaro Seat Rail:

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...0bb48db917.jpg

Then bolt them up:
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...47bdf71d21.jpg

Install the seat rail adjustment lever (make sure the part where it have RECARO printed face upside so you can see it each time you adjust the seat :p)

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...c94b6f2309.jpg

Remove the wiring harness for seat position sensor from the original Honda front driver seat, since it is impossible to take out the position sensor itself from the original Honda front driver seat (unless you disassemble the seat completely, I decided to buy a brand new position sensor to make my life much easier :p)
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...40fbd60b17.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...076adf8afa.jpg
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...7dcd67b03d.jpg

I bought a used Honda Fit passenger seat complete with airbag a long time ago from another fitfreak member, so I decide to just CUT the wiring harness from the airbag to use the connector plug:
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...2296459793.jpg

Soldered the resistor to the connector (that I cut from the airbag module above):
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...4005613093.jpg

At first, I was confused on why the connector seemed to short circuit and did not show the value of the 2.2ohms resistor, later I found out, this type of connector is shorted if unplugged, but once you plugged them to their counterpart socket, it will open and not shorted anymore

I left the position sensor lying on the carpet beneath the seat since there is no way I can install this to the Recaro seat rail, and then I connect the resistor connector to the vehicle airbag harness and seat belt buckle sensor harness:
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...1bb38218a0.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...4a9c9ad428.jpg

BMW ALPINA 07-06-2019 04:54 PM

Turn on the engine and NO airbag/SRS error at all :vtec:

So, I get the new BOLT to secure the seat rail to the floor of the vehicle (yes, I buy a NEW Bolt per the instruction of Honda service manual and use the washer from Recaro):

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...b8d880b2de.jpg

and.... INSTALLED :D:D:p

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...1e8486fd58.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fit...a34c505943.jpg

To be continued for the Passenger side :thumbups:

Hi Chantastic,

I LOVE it, I means if (seats) looks could kill, this is it :D
I wish I bought it a few years ago (so I had enjoyed it), but better late then never :p

I LOVE MY RECARO SR-7 ASM LIMITED RUBY, THEY ARE SO GORGEOUS (look even better in real life because the alcantara is really DEEP BLACK, unlike on the picture). :thumbups: :p :D

The only thing is, turn out the seat OPDS sensor that I took from the 2009/2010 used seat and the corresponding weight sensor were not match with 2013 Honda Fit (my car), so next step is to get both the OPDS seat sensor and weight sensor from my own 2013 Honda Fit right seat... I am too tired today, I will try to do it soon :p

DT_GK6 08-09-2019 08:29 PM

I've been thinking about getting these seats. They look great!

DT_GK6 08-15-2019 10:14 AM

Did you have any issues with the OPDS sensor after installing the passenger seat?

Hello DT_GK6, Thanks for your kind words.
at this time, I am still having issue with OPDS sensor because the used passenger seat that I bought from the pre 2012 Honda Fit GE, and they change some of the actual OPDS sensor embedded on the seat foam for 2012 and newer model.
So I need to buy a 2012 or newer seat and use those OPDS sensor. I don't want to take it out from my own stock 2013 passenger seat just in case I want to take out the Recaro out.

BMW ALPINA 11-28-2019 06:50 PM

Finally, I have time to solve the AirBag Warning Light on the dashboard. So The Solutions:
a. Buy another USED Passenger (Right) seat from the same year as mine (2013) since the whole OPDS Sensor and Control Unit change for 2012 model above, but to be safe, I bought from a USED2013 Honda Fit model (Sport or Non Sport is not a problem).
b. Took out the 4 Weight Sensor and the OPDS Sensor (embedded on the upper back seat cushion) from this used seat and transfer it to my Recaro.
Just a heads up, the T30 Torx Bolt that secure (2 per weight sensor or total of 8) the weight sensor are so hard to unscrew that I destroy 2 Impact Wrench Grade Torx Bit and 2 Non Impact Wrench Grade Torx Bit. Some of them stripped out, so I had to purchase a Screw (Drill) extractor Kit. Because of that, I replace them with Grade 12.9 M8 Hex Socket Bolt from Recaro. I am just glad that the taller head M8 Hex Socket Bolt still have enough clearance to allow the Recaro Seat Rail to slide properly.

c. Another challenge that I face was, I tried to used the control unit from the used 2013 Fit, but no matter I try, the DTC error won't clear... so after reading the service manual, I found out that although the used passenger seat that I bought came with the Control Unit, however turn out this control unit is a READ ONCE only. So you can only initialized it ONCE and it will record your car ECU ID#. Which means the used control unit can only be used with the car it originally came from.
So, I just took out the control unit from my original passenger seat, and voila, all DTC cleared after using Honda Diagnostic System to Initialized them
d. The Initialization sequence took 2 step, first to initialized the control unit, second to calibrate the weight sensor. All you need to do is to add some weight (I used my weight lifting weight at 30pounds), then enter the 30 pounds value on the calibration screen, accelerate and drive the car over 22mph, stop on level ground, press enter, and the weight show it measure 28 lbs and 13 oz, so close enough for the system to accept.

Now, the whole system works as normal, no Airbag warning light on the dashboard, and the "airbag off" light on the center console also turn on whenever I put wight on the bottom cushion seat to mimic small children, but turn off right away if I sat (and put pressure on the seat back where the OPDS sensor is).

Note: the main difference between pre 2012 OPDS system to after 2012 was, for PRE 2012, it actually have 3 set of wires coming out of the OPDS sensor to the control unit, while for the AFTER 2012, only 2 set of wires from OPDS sensor to the control unit...
The weight sensor is also different, because when I used the PRE 2012 weight sensor, I can't even calibrate and it show the weight as MAX OUT (something like over 200lbs).
Oh, one more thing, the 4 weight sensor need to be located EXACTLY like where they are located on the original Honda Seat, so make sure you marked which sensor goes to LeftFront, LeftRear, Right Front and RightRear, even their washer were color coded (black/white).

Want to add that I put the whole Control Unit on the LEFT Side of the Recaro. I just forced and slide it in from the opening right above the Rotary Know to adjust the seat backrest angle. So they are located exactly where the original location is because they might have some kind of sensor that measure their angle/position)
Another important thing is, I made sure the weight sensor is for my 2013 model because Pre 2012 model have different weight sensor calibration value. The OPDS sensor also came from a USED 2013 seat.
One last thing to note is, when you use Honda Diagnostic Tool to initialize, it usually fail to initialize the first step but when you go to the next step (OPDS plus SWS (seat weight sensor), it just works and clear my DTC right away.

In the end, another successful modification and another successful day :D

Chantastic 11-28-2019 09:32 PM

Thank you for this!! I am struggling to find a used 2013 seat (mine is also a 2013, and I don't want to take the risk of getting a 2012). On my failed Recaro airbag project, I was using 09 weight sensors (and seat back sensors ) with the OPDS mounted horizontally on the bottom of the seat. It was stuck open at 249lbs, the maximum weight rating according to Honda.

Since then I have bought 08 Civic Si seats which will not communicate with the Fit, even with the '13 Fit OPDS installed (they are very comfortable though). I still have the same Chinese HDS unit off Amazon which I cannot get to work, however I just purchased Windows XP, which apparently it will run on.

My questions for you are:

1. Did you have to cut a hole in the Recaro foam to mount the OPDS? Thankfully for the Civic seat I do not need to do this, however I should tear apart a 13 Fit passenger seat and then also take its cords and replace the Civic ones just to be safe.

2. Is the OPDS the control unit? Just so I am clear on my understanding.

3. If the OPDS = control unit, I have my original 13 unit so I should have no problems there?

4. I assume you used the 13 driver side position sensor?

5. Did you also take out the sensors from the back rest (two of them) and put them in the Recaro?

Thank you so much!! And congrats on getting this working, it is a lot of work!

ANSWER: Initially, I was also using what I think was a 2010 or 2011 seat, and the weight sensor also stuck open at over 200lbs... wrong calibration... although those weight sensor looks the same between the 2013 and the PRE 2012 one... but the T30 TORX bolt on the PRE 2012 was so much easier to take out, Honda must torque the 2013 weight sensor bolt much higher...

I still have the same Chinese HDS unit off Amazon which I cannot get to work, however I just purchased Windows XP, which apparently it will run on.

ANSWER: I had been running the Chinese HDS (ebay) sensor that I think I told you long time ago, but I am able to running it on Windows 10,... they key is your USB to Serial Cable Adapter, need to find one that is compatible with Windows 10...

My questions for you are:

ANSWER: I did not cut a hole in my Recaro Seat because the center part (of the back rest) can be partly remove easily that allow me to just slip the OPDS sensor behind it

2. Is the OPDS the control unit? Just so I am clear on my understanding.
ANSWER: NO, OPDS is the thin flat sensor that was kinda embedded into our HOnda Fit backrest foam, there are 2 separate parts of the OPDS with 2 separate wire (for 2013 Honda Fit Seat) coming out of the OPDS going into the small metal box that contain the control unit.

3. If the OPDS = control unit, I have my original 13 unit so I should have no problems there?
ANSWER: Control Unit is the small metal box located on the left side of our Honda Fit passenger Seat, OPDS is the thin flat sensor as I describe above

4. I assume you used the 13 driver side position sensor?
ANSWER: YES, on the driver side, I just plug in the position sensor but it just kinda laying on the ground since the Recaro Rail did not have the ... hmmm. how should I say it, basically the reference where the position sensor can pick it's location.
When I use my HDS, I can see that the driver seat (left seat) position sensor see the seat position as NOT Near.

5. Did you also take out the sensors from the back rest (two of them) and put them in the Recaro?
ANSWER: YES, those were the OPDS sensor.

Thank you so much!! And congrats on getting this working, it is a lot of work!

Yes, I hope you can get your seats system to works too, oh please see my answers inside your Quote above

Chantastic 11-30-2019 03:02 PM

Thanks again! I had it backwards - I thought the OPDS was the metal box. I am glad I have my original control unit then. If I source a 2013 seat I should be able to get this working. They are hard to find in my area (hard to find a GE for parts in western Canada for some reason). And yes the 09 torx screws were easy to remove, once you could get to the actual sensor itself. I am hoping my airbag in the driver side 08 civic seat will be compatible...if not, I should just be able to out a 2.2ohms resistor on it, combined with the passenger side 13 internals and it should all be working.

Out of curiosity, how did you mount the weight sensors to the bottom of your Recaro?

Out of curiosity, how did you mount the weight sensors to the bottom of your Recaro?

I mounted it UPSIDE DOWN compare to the way it was mounted on the Original Fit Rail, and I had to drill some holes in the Recaro Rail.
Oh, I also had to drilled out some rivet on the Recaro Rail to separate the sliding mechanism and the legs, then I mounted the Weight Sensor (Load Cell) on top or the lets and the rail on top of the load cell/weight sensor.
Due the spacing of the rivet closely match the spacing of the 2 holes for the TORX on the load cell, I decide to mount it upside down, and just enlarge 1 hole on the legs to bolted the stud with the "spring" of the load cell/weight sensor.
