Can't close passenger door on '09 Fit -- please help!!

Got my '09 Fit a month ago, loving it. Big problem now. Wife pushed/rotated in the white latch/tab thing on the side of the passenger door so that now the opening that goes around the metal U-shaped lock on the body of the car is blocked by that tab. And I can't get the tab to budge when I try to push it back and up! All other doors have these tabs too and I have no idea what they do -- they don't seem to lower when the doors are locked, even though it looks like are designed just for that. I don't know what to do. Won't be able to take it to the dealer till Monday and in the meanwhile we'd have to park the car on the street completely unlocked and with the door visibly open!! How do I lift that white tab, please help!!

OMG thank you so much! It took a few tries but lifting the door handle did the trick. I tried that yesterday too but I was I'm too much of a door noob. Geez I feel stupid but thank you thank you thank you.

I'd be willing to bet this could happen with any car with the right operator. I can't imagine there are too many ways to design a door latch.
