They told me it wasn't safe to drive...

Ok, So Saturday, my girlfriend and I are headed to the river, and I notice my check engine light. I thought it could wait until Monday so I started to the river.

I gave the car some gas, for the first time that drive, and the car lagged and lurched forward shaking the whole way. It was so bad I knew it had to go straight to the dealership.

Get there and they told me they did think it was safe to drive. He also told me they had never come across any problems like this.

Have any of you had this happen?
:(

btw

Had to rent a car... Got a Prius.... BOY DO I MISS MY FIT!!

MNfit May 9, 2010 10:52 PM

x2. i had a sensor go out when my car was 1.5 hours old and it did the same thing.

mtunofun May 9, 2010 10:57 PM

It happened to my previous car, which was a Mini Cooper. It was a stuck throttle body or something like that. Exactly what you described...I had to limp to the emergency lane in the middle of nowhere and wait for a tow truck.

Vash May 9, 2010 11:21 PM

had a friend with a similar problem with a brand new honda civic, did it sound like the car was about to die? his was like his oil pump. but it could be many things.

abgenre May 9, 2010 11:25 PM

Yes it did sound like it was going to die.

That was the only info they could give me. They were closing a little while later, so they probably still haven't looked at it.

Vash May 10, 2010 12:08 AM

hopefully it is the sensor like what those guys said above.

what did the RPM look like during this? theres a few things i could think that would do that. the sensor at the throttle body will make it choke and the engine just cut off. and having the valve off at where the TB would also make it feel like its about to cut off but not actually cutting off. (kinda like its camming but its not)

a helicopter sounding like its about to crash is something engine internal. any of those ringing a bell?

christiandaniel222 May 10, 2010 12:15 AM

Wow, how many miles are on your Fit? That's scary...

Dee K May 10, 2010 01:29 AM

Happened to me a few months ago. Had to get it towed to the dealership cause the thing wouldnt even hold an idle before cutting out. Turns out it was the Mass Airflow Sensor.

abgenre May 10, 2010 08:26 AM

If I took off at a very slow pace it was fine. But if I would actually put my foot down the only time it would act up was during a gear shift. Unfortunately I didn't look at the RPM's. I was trying to keep the Girlfriend calm.

It has 48,000 Miles right now.

To me it felt more like the Transmission.

OK FOLKS GOT THE REPORT FOR FIT.

a mouse did it...

a mouse crawled into the car and chewed his way through the wiring harness shorting out the system.

New wiring harness: $1100.00

Insurance is going to pay but my extended warranty will not. Plus I don't have Rental coverage. b/c I have another car, so that will be going to me also. But of course I haven't driven it in so long the transmission is slipping in it and the car won't go over 30mph.
Unless it has cooled down then it will drive correctly again. SO much fun for me, but coulda been worse.

thefit09 May 10, 2010 10:24 PM

damn mice!

Fitcious May 11, 2010 10:52 PM

Fit owned by a mouse. LOL

bmxman May 11, 2010 10:57 PM

wow same thing happened to my Integra except it was a family of rats that had nested in the stock air intake. I had to source a whole entire harness for it...not easy to find a GSR harness for a 92-93 Integra. There were less than 4000 made for North America. I did finally find it but install was time consuming and it only cost me $250...I can't imagine paying over a grand...but hey at least you found the cause.

Shockwave199 May 11, 2010 11:00 PM

Wow! That sucks!

But of course I haven't driven it in so long the transmission is slipping in it and the car won't go over 30mph
So, this car is not driven very often? Is it sitting somewhere? How often do you drive it? Just curious.

Wow. First of all I'm suprised your Insurance is paying for this. Mice Damage is covered? Good policy.

Secondly, what would worry me, is where there is one mice there are usually others. If they have been attracted to your car what's going to keep them from chomping again?

You need cats. A Fit guard cat.

Good luck.

MNfit May 12, 2010 12:06 PM

that sucks, at least insurance is going to pay for it

hayden May 12, 2010 12:09 PM

Can't the wiring harness just be repaired? $1100!!?

hayden May 12, 2010 12:10 PM

Yeah, but he will pay for it eventually. You can make a claim for almost any kind of damage and pay your deductible. They will just put him on the long term payment plan called "increased rates."

vtecfit1 May 12, 2010 12:17 PM

honda is doing research on how to keep mice from doing this, (wraps on wire harnesses, block off plates, etc.) mice suck (or chew lol)
i agree get a cat!! even if its an outside cat (if there is such a thing) feed it twice a day and feed it next to the fit, that way its always waiting by the fit and can keep an eye on it for ya - LOL
