AC sqeals/groans/doesn't work after 16k?

Hey All,

I have a 2010 base Fit that I got last October. It has ~16k miles on it, and on Sunday I noticed that speeds1-3 on the fan knob no longer worked.

On Monday, all of a sudden the car made a horrible nails-on-chalkboard squealing noise in the cabin, which went away when I shut off the AC. When I turned the AC back on a few hours later, there was a groaning noise that went along with it.

Has anybody heard of this happening or have any ideas on what happened?
What kind of costs should I expect when I bring it in? This kind of thing is under warranty, correct?

Thank you!!

You can expect zero expense (other than the hassle of taking it to the dealer service dept).

they will replace the blower motor and the resistor set which enables speeds 1-3. The sound is probably the blower motor bearings binding. This may have caused the resistors to fail.

It's covered by warranty.

Awesome! I saw that there was service bulletin for it, but it is for 2009 models, so I wasn't sure if I was covered or not. Thanks!

Anytime anything fails that's not normal maintenance (i.e. brake pads, tires) or damage, it's covered by the warranty. TSBs are just to give the technicians a heads-up for frequently occurring issues.

Your 2010 blower failure is probably rare.

That nasty whining sound can happen with any blower motor when the bearings start to wear out, especially if it is exposed to humidity. I've had the same thing happen on my bathroom exhaust fan!
