Insulation near driver's feet.
 

Hi.
2010 Fit Sport in silver is the ride.
There is insulation coming out near the firewall. Maybe I rest my feet beyond the pedals and on the firewall above where the carpet is laid...
Should i just staple more carpet so I can still rest my feet on the firewall?
Do I make any sense?

anyone have input on this one?

Sorry for my dumb question, I am trying to visualize, what is a firewall that you mentioned.

There has been some reporting of premature carpet wear. I suggest that since your Fit is still under warranty that you take it back to the dealer and insist on a fix.

Farther - Good advice, I'm wondering though how he gets his feet up in there???

I will venture a guess that different drivers assume different postures while driving, especially our FIT seats can fold 7 days to sunday. So, the position of the driver will wear out the car carpet in some areas

One think I noticed for myself was that when driving my previous accord for 10 years, my body used to lean 10 degrees towards my right while driving resulting in frequent episodes of neck ache but I could not change my driving posture.. no idea why..

After upgrading to FIT that has a more aggressive seating position, I am forced to sit up straight while driving instead of leaning 10 degrees like i used to in my previous accord and my neck ache is now gone!!

I keep tracking bits of the insulating material off the firewall. I just pick it off when I vacuum the carpets.

Mostly its fro, my feet extending past the top of the shortish dead-pedal, or when I get tired of having my left foot jammed up so close, I'll stretch my left leg out and rest my foot on the firewall where the clutch would be.*

At first I thought you were talking about the insulation to the right of the throttle pedal, against the center hump. I pulled the carpet back and cut all that crap out of there. It gives me more space around the throttle, and keeps my foot from rubbing as much against the carpet.

* the dead pedal seems a bit close and not very tall, but that's likely a result of the cab-forward design pushing the passenger compartment into the front axle area (and on FF cars the front axle is usually further rearward than in conventional designs) - it requires more intrusion by the wheel wells, which is hidden on the drivers side by the dead-pedal.

I used my old accord heavy duty rubber mat oversized for the FIT but will help extend up a little above and behind the brake and gas pedal. Works OK so far..but I will suffer MPG a little because the 4 rubber mats from the accord is heavy.

I am not sure if I am penny wise and pound foolish, trying to save $$ by recycling oversize rubber mats to use in my FIT and spend more gas in the end :confused:

How heavy are these mats? They'd realistically have to be probably 30lbs each for each of the 4 mats to have any realistic effect on fuel economy. a 3-5lb mat won't matter at all.

You are right specboy, the mat is about 5 lb each so will be 20 lb in total. So, I need not have to worry then.. will continue to use the recycled rubber mats.

As a matter of fact, I am an obsessed recycle freak... I have my accord carpet mats in the FIT too because I refuse to spend extra on FIT carpeted mats. In my FIT, you will also find the carpeted mats belonging to my previous previous car, Toyota Corolla's carpet mats .... am I nuts? :p

I noticed the same bald spot next to the gas pedal on my 2009 M/T. I cut a 3" X 4" piece from a thin, flexible rubber stair mat, rounded the corners and used velcro tape on the edges. I just slapped it in place over the worn spot - seems to work well, and easy and cheap to replace if this one wears through.

i remember getting some black hard felt and just hot glueing it to the carpeting. worked great.

you can souce the hard felt from amazon or most art stores.

Sounds like a good idea - I'll keep it in mind if my velcro patch begins to slip. It's now my son's car (I get to drive it while he's away at college!) so I didn't want to do any gluing without his OK. Thanks for the tip!
