&^%$#*()!?! "Road Snakes"

Hit a large chunk of semi truck tire tread on the way into work- dark road, 0 dark thirty in the am- boom there it was & I drove over it. Popped the fog lights out, pushed in the front valence under the bumper, broke the tray under the engine.... this sucks!. Not sure if there is any other damage underneath, so far no leaking fluids...
Called into AAA, waiting to hear from the body shop about a tow/rental car.
Pics to follow once it is light enough to take them.

Road hazards always sucks but nothing makes you want to poop yourself more then a truck dropping a aluminum ladder right in front of you on the freeway while riding a motorcycle, that made me almost shit myself.

Wafulz 12-27-2012 12:23 PM

Ohh man that sucks happen to me before on my civic it brok my light damge hood rip a chunk off my bumper took my mudgard and boom back tire lol : / hope all goes well

Codger01 12-27-2012 12:30 PM

Looking it over once I had daylight, at a minimum I am looking at:
New bumper & cover
New fog light(s) ( the passenger side one may be salvagable)
New mounting bracket for AC condenser ( & poss. new AC condenser)
New undertray
New grille
+ what ever other damage I can't see that may have happened as that chunk of tire spit out the back- & it was the full circumference of tread from a semi truck tire.
thankfully I have AAA insurance.

time for a 2012 conversion!

KCTitan 12-27-2012 04:33 PM

Yes sir,

I feel your pain. About a month ago I was driving to work and was in the process of passing a truck. I was between a concrete barrier and the truck in the right middle lane. I suddenly look up to see a large piece of rubber kicked up from the truck flying at my front right quarter. Did quite a bit of damage to the body. Repair shop estimated about $900 damage.

I've actually been debating trading my 2012 in for either a 2012/2013 MT Sport Fit or a Honda CR-Z.

Codger01 12-27-2012 04:47 PM

Am doing the research now for the "if they write off the Fit, what do I replace it with" option. I still have another year of payments on it, and was going to call this week to set up for a 70K service, so if its a write off, will have to see what I have left from the insurance & the pay off and go from there.
The rental I got is an Altima, so getting used to that..... quite a difference from the Fit!

This is what I hit! it's off on the shoulder now, but was in the middle of my lane when i hit it..

Irritates me when people blow a tire and either don't call someone to come pull it off the road or do it themselves when no one is coming.

DaveInWoodland 12-27-2012 07:50 PM

And I felt bad when a rock left a small mark (not even a crack on my windshield). I need to re-evaluate my priorities. Hope they come through ok for you. I have AAA and can't say enough good things about them when needed.

I'd say thats about $1,000 in repairs, way too low to total it.

How about a box spring flying off a car and having to ride/jump over it? That was my biggest pucker moment. :hyper:

What kind of bike do you have?

One of many bikes I've had in my crazy days, my 190whp 06' ZX14R and my 165whp 09' R1 was prolly the craziest things on wheels I've ridden. :hyper:

Finally got the estimate- $2600. Should have "my baby" back 1/9/13.

KCTitan 12-30-2012 03:24 PM

That's far worse than the damage to mine. Is insurance going to cover it? Also I'm curious, if you are going through insurance if your rates will go up because of it. Honestly I think Insurance companies are a bunch of crooks lol.

Exactly what I hit, in S. Carolina on a trip north, mine was just a bit shorter but was standing on edge too, felt it hit the front and pass under the car, stopped at motel a couple of miles later and assessed the damage, had duct tape, wire and super glue, put it back together an continued on. Both fog lights damaged but repairable, scuffs on bumper cleaned up.
Considered us lucky the air bags didn't deploy.

I figured it was less damage than deductible of insurance so why bother.
But now I know why it costs more to insure the Fit than a Mercury Grand Marquis.

We need extra height to be able to pass over something the width of truck tire or a parking lot bump stop.:vtec:

The airbags are intended to deploy only if the car itself suddenly decelerates a lot (or possibly if the frame is being severely mangled). While many things that cause the bumper to be destroyed also cause the airbags to go off, it's not the destruction of the bumper and other crushable car bits that does it. The bumper itself, in fact, is just a chunk of plastic; it has no sensors of any sort in it (nor anything at all electrical except the fog lights if you have them).

Sweet ride you have! (nice car too ;))

My first (and favorite) was a 1984 Honda Magna V-30 and now have a '99 Sportster that I've had since new. My best friend has an '08 R1 that I have ridden and as you said, it is one sick machine.

Here's my baby

Insurance will cover, less my $500 deductable. As I have been with CSAA for 25+ yrs now, and all of our "accidents" have found to be not our fault (wife's 2001 Miata has been backed into 3 times, my last claim was for my 2003 Mazda Protege 5 where I got rear ended at a traffic signal a block away from the house) they have not raised my rates. But in those previous incidents they were able to recover from the other drivers insurance. My policy just renewed, so will not see a rate change until next year, if any.
The parts list is quite "impressive"- have to replace:
Front bumper cover, lower bumper grille, bumper spoiler
Both fog lights
A/c condenser (& recharge AC)
Right cooling shield
Right fender liner
Front body lower tie bar
Engine under covers
Repair floor panel
And the usual paint & prep.
