Just got done removing and trashing my old Kensington gooseneck holder, which really worked great EXCEPT for the junk suck-tion cup, which after about 2 years in the Florida sun/heat, had deteriorated to a brown, gummy piece of..... Too bad it couldn't be replaced. So, I'm on the hunt for a fresh one. Here's what I'm considering:


Considering the steep rake angle of the Fit's windshield and the short reach of this mount, I'm thinking of mounting it on the dash instead of the glass. iOttie claims their suction cup holds well on dash and textured surfaces. The flat area above the dash is textured somewhat, wonder how the suction cup will do there?

I just bought this and is working quite well.


my only problem is finding a decent spot to put it in now that i downloaded a dash cam app for my s4. i found so far the best place to mount it on is right under the rearview mirror, where it won't get in the way of the sunshield. i dont want to mount on the dash since they never stick on properly.

 

My biggest problem with the Kensington was the suction cup. Not made to last. Substandard manufacturing/material quality resulted in total failure with the cup being left flat and inflexible, now a gummy, sticky, nasty brown mess, requiring extensive cleaning with rubbing alcohol to get the crap off the glass and my fingers. The design makes the cup non-replaceable.

The iBolt is a bit bulky for me, and I don't require the aux-out feature. A little expensive as well. The iOttie has several neat features I like. The way the spring-loaded arms grab the phone as you press it into the cradle, and they release by squeezing the side tabs. The bottom forks support the phone and let you plug in without blocking the port. If it won't stick well on the dash surface, I think your idea of under the rearview mirror is the best spot compromise. That's where I had the goose-neck before, just liked the longer reach which brought it right over by the wheel. But hey, if it'll stay tight on the glass, that's what I really need most.

 

I have a mount that goes in the CD player slot, which I really like. It obstructs some of the radio controls, but I use the steering wheel controls most of the time so it doesn't bother me. Mounting in the CD player is very sturdy and just the right height and distance from me.

 

I decided to go for the iOttie, coming tomorrow. A chat with a rep said they won't guarantee it to suck on the Fit's dash surface, being textured. I think it will be ok on the glass placed properly.

 

Here is what I use on the Fit. It hold onto the dash very well but I decided to mount it on the front quarter side window.

Lol so funny I just found this thread. I was actually cleaning out my garage the other day and found the mount for my magellin from like 2006. Took a dremel and cut off the top part where it curved in to hold the navi, and then cut holes in the bottom for power and sound. Fits my iphone perfectly and i recycled. Only thing now is securing the upper part. I have a rubber band right now that goes around the lower part of the phone and so far no problems.

 

I think this is a common problem with the rubber of the mounts in general. Hoping my imagnet won't end up like that....

Good grief look at all the stuff you have cluttering your dash and windshield. Just b4 i did this reply i noticed the nav on the left quarter window. This pic explains why i got 13' sport navi or others buying aftermarket for the same reason. You have 3 different reasons why you aren't focused on the pavement...lol.

Not when you are sporting a nice case. This wont work for my Samsung Galaxy Mega with Ballistic case.

 

I have the iOttie OneTouch in my fit and absolutely recommend it to anyone. The suction cup is incredible. I have mine mounted UNDER the stereo in that little area behind the shifter (over the cup holders). The Suction Cup is attached to the bottom of the dash so the phone hangs from the under side of the dash and I have never once had it fall off in the 9 months it's been installed. Every now and then I wiggle it to see how snug it is - NO ISSUES. (My garmin falls off of the front corner window every few months - I am thinking about getting another iOttie for my garmin.

I hear these can damage your dash on removal though?

 

I have tried a bunch of different designs. This one (see below) works the best for me. It goes in the vent and it will never come loose as far as I can tell. Removing it takes some doing. You need to gently pry the vent with a butter knife or screw driver (I use the car key in a pinch) while disengaging the locking mechanism. Ditto for how well it holds the phone. Ain't never coming loose. It places the phone just above the radio and does not interfere with dials or visibility. Unfortunately, I can't find it on amazon so I don't know if it's still available. I found this video. You can skip ahead to about 1:40 if you want to see it installed.

 

I have had three of these and have never once had an issue with the dash(damage). The newer ones (OneTouch 2 & IQ) get the "Disc" which is supposed to provide a smooth surface and that comes with adhesive but I've never needed the Disc because the suction cup works extremely well - so I can't speak for any damage that it might do. The one on top of the dash is the OneTouch IQ with wireless charging for my Moto Turbo 2. (My Moto X with Case is in the photo)




The one below the dash is the One Touch that I use for my work Moto X (2013). I had a OneTouch XL for the Turbo 2 in this spot (before I got the OneTouch IQ and moved it to the dash). I can confirm that both the stock one touch and the XL fit with no issues. For both holders, you do have to tweak the positioning of the Mount so your knuckles don't hit the screen on the 5MT (don't know on the Auto). Every once in a while mine do touch on faster/harder shifting but it's no big deal. (Side Note - I have not tried the IQ below the dash but I don't see why it wouldn't fit.)



Hope this helps and after some of the contraptions I have seen in cars (Gooseneck mounts, etc...) I'm way more than happy with the OneTouch.
