Recommended Brand of Oil?
 

Just curious into what Oil do you guys run in your GE8's?:thumbups:

You should start a survey with the major brands.

I like the marketing for Mobil1 and the price at wally world.

Same.

5W20 M1 Syn High Mileage every other change, regular 5W20 M1 Syn.

I'll probably be using Pennzoil because that's the 0W20 that we carry at work.

I buy Honda full synthetic 0W20 and a genuine Honda filter from local dealer.I change my own oil,letting it drain overnight.Always use a new washer on the drain plug and torque the drain plug with a torque wrench.

Thank You guys! I'm leaning towards Mobile1 as well because thats what I've used to change oil for my BMW 0W40 Full Synthetic. Does Mobile1 make a 0W20 Synthetic? Anyways where can I find a replacement Oil release valve drain plug for my oil pan? makes changing oil so much easier and how many miles are you suppose to replace the oil in the GE8? So far I'm at 1.2K miles the car is new, and how about filling/draining the Transmission oil?

mobil1 green cap 0w20 in my '12 and silver cap 5w20 in my '09.


i just buy the 5qt jugs at walmart and keep the 1qt in case i need to add later.

I usually go with either Castrol Edge 0w20 or Amsoil Signature Series 0w20 for mine the first change will be with the edge and then I'll start using amsoil again!

Doesn't matter. Just change it once in a while.

Is there an advantage to this? Is starting a cold dry engine a good thing?

I don't think it'd hurt though either. I assume he does it to get every last drop of the old oil out, but it's not needed.

It's no different than starting your car cold in the morning, most of the oil on the parts has moved down to the pan at that point as well, same thing.

I'd be more worried an insect would crawl in there and clog my pickup :p

Yea I feel the same, especially if you leave the car outside to drain over night, I'm kinda iffy bout little particles of sand and such will be blown into the drain plug hole.

Or gusts of wind blowing your dripping oil all over the place, if you do this outside.

Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge are good choices for 0w20. As far as interval is concerned, a lot of folks on here swear by the Maintenance Minder. I prefer to change the oil more frequently at 5000 mile intervals. There are several ways (search the threads) to gauge when to change your oil so just go with the one that sounds best to you. I will say, however, that whatever your interval, doing your first oil change early (1.5k-3k miles) is a good idea for draining any debris shed during the break-in period of the engine.

Letting it drain for long periods is an exercise in futility...

It retains half a quart of oil regardless.

I do it overnite because it does allow more to drain.Just put your drain plug in finger tight,wait a few minutes,then take it out again.You will have more oil draining out.I have the luxury of doing this in my heated shop,so no dust blowing around or insects crawling in the oil pan.Perhaps a bit overkill but easy for me to do as I have other vehicles to drive.While you can't do it with the Fit,on vehicles where the oil filter hangs vertically I always prefill the filter with oil.This does help when restarting after an oil change as the filter fills first before oil goes anywhere else.

i just let it drain until it drips pretty slow... maybe 10-15min tops. i think it's really overkill draining it overnight.

X2... I let it drain about 10 minutes, until it drips very slow.

Overnight? Really? Never have I heard someone do that, ever.. Heck, the dealership takes less time than I do to do a oil change..

Your never going to get 100% out so to me its pointless... MAYBE, let it drain for 30 minutes, but still overkill IMO.

the most important thing about oil change is to actually do the change.

oil/filter brand isn't important. Buy whatever fits your mood. Having said that i use Mobil1 + Purolator personally.

Actually it is important. Fram ( especially low end ) filters are absolute garbage.. Look at bobtheoilguy.com for one of many reviews... And oils do matter.. Detergents and zinc make huge differences in the breakdown...
