Your Motor Oil/Oil Filter of Choice
So to go synthetic do I need to flush the regular oil or just let it drain out like normal and add synthetic when time for an oil change? The Grnad Caravan is coming up on an oil change and wondering if I should go synthetic for it too.
normal oil change, nothing special.
Why go synthetic on the grand caravan? you hit the highway speeding in high rpms or something? Id just stick with regular oil and just keep up on maintenance like usual

I was thinking I can go longer between oil changes on the van with synthetic and the van is over 60K miles in 3 years time. We got it used.
even so, the van doesnt have a small high revving 4 banger under the hood. Regular oil is fine, and can go 5-6k miles on a change no problem.
Heck, Honda was recommending regular 5w-30 in its old D series for 7500 mile intervals during average driving.
If you are worried, run 10w-30 or 10w-40 in the van for a bit more piece of mind. It will not hurt the motor. Just check the oil with a lint free white paper towel, and if the used oil soaks in right away, its done. If it takes a while to soak in, its still got life in it.

Just had my first oil change today!
Just had it changed at a Quick Lube that offered Mobil 1 0w20 and I also get 15.00 dollar rebate too with it. I had 5,235 Miles on this oil change and the OLM was down to 5% and I am very happy with this car still and loving every minute i drive it! I haven't had time to do it on my own so i went to the Quick Lube where they also have a car wash too and got that done also.
i agree with many of the comments posted.
my logic is this....high priced speciality oils have purpose when the vehicle they are used in is subjected to that level of driving /performance the oil was intended for.
otherwise i ask myself....why did i purchase this type car? ah, yes it is cheap on gas & intital cost....with that mission statement as a guideline the oil used is a full synth whatever is on sale ...tech 2000 wally world being usually the winner, and a puralator filter. now my cheap gas saver stays a cheap gas saving and doesn't end up costing me an inflated price for the life of the car.
most consumers aren't gonna own their car much pass 150K & with regular LOF, which is the key, using ANY oil that meets the API specs will take the car to that mileage when driven as it was designed......a people hauler on public roads....ET.AL.

I always use Penrite Racing 10 - 10w40 as i track the Jazz quite often. i also use engine flush before each oil change because it made a difference. i have compared 2 same engines with same oil change intervals with same oil and filter. but one without engine flush, the build up inside the engine is very noticible after 30,000km. engine flush is only around $15, so why not??
do you treat with the LiquiMoly Ceratec every oil change, or every fourth, or did you use a full can the first time and a 4th of one for the each of the rest? Are you happy with it? Can you tell any difference? Have you had oil analysis done since using it?
thanks
thanks
AMSOIL signature 5W20 with 15K Amsoil filter
Been doing this for three years now with no problem. I change the oil once a year and change the AMSOIL filter after 15K. Top the engine off with new oil after I change the filter. I drive about 20-25K mi a year.
Just had a O.C with the new 0w-20 Pennzoil Pure Plus synthetic and the Honda A02 oil filter . Previous was 0w-20 Pennzoil Platinum synthetic and the A02 oil filter that had a little over 9,200 miles and 8 months of use . No oil consumed . The Pennzoil Platinum and Pure Plus quarts have been under $3 each with the rebates from SHELL ( S.O.P.U.S. ) . The A02 are less than $8 each and labor at about $15 for each O.C.. So under $35 for a synthetic oil change .

I dont feelant diffeence, per se, this is very subjective... whati can see very obvious is that the engine is very quiet... and smooth.I Am also using Amsoil Oil which is good too...
no studies done .
was/am
i was running
royal purple
5w-20
with
royal purple synthetic oil filter (pretty much the best filter you can buy)
then i did a lot of reading about oil grades and what synthetic means and what a full synthetic vs a 100% synthetic means and i switched to.
Torco SR-1
0w-20
with
royal purple synthetic oil filter
i think that I'm actually going to bump up to a 30 viscosity oil next change though as my engine is getting a bit older. I expect my mpg to drop slightly but the added protection for me is worth it considering the amount of miles on my engine...

You will not see any negative side-effects from using 30 weight oil. The best thing you should do though, is absolutely refrain from driving aggressively until motor is properly warmed up.
Thats the only "bad" thing about running slightly thicker oil. You only need to pay a little more attention to how you drive when motor is cold.
Up here in wisconsin, I can confirm 0w-20 is not some saving grace for cold starts. So I say go ahead with your want of 5w-30.
You will enjoy having a quieter engine. Top end isnt as loud. It wont make it dead silent, but if you drive on the interstate often, your ears will tell you its better lol

how do you find this mix? do you like it better than a straight 30 or 20 or was this a matter of availability'? also i was reading up on filters and the ae filters from amsoil are very good but the royal purple ones are slightly better built and have slightly better filtration. i think the RP one is about 3 bucks more though but it is available from like a pep boys where the ae isn't. trade offs i guess.
