Can I change the crush washer on the drain plug?
I know your suppose to get a new one but was wondering if I could just put a regular washer on there instead? So I won't need to replace it every time I change my oil! That would be nice!

I wouldn't recommend it. The reason it's a crush washer is it will conform tighter to the drain plug and really seal it. If you just put a regular washer there's a chance it will drip a little I think. That happens if you don't use a washer.
Crush washers are like $.99, or a few bucks for a pack of three. Just do it the right way? |
I don't see how you're messing it up every oil change. You're most likely not doing it right.

I would never reuse a crush washer. The reason its called a crush washer is because it crushes when used.
|
I had my last car for over 200,000 miles. I reused the crush washer for a few years until I lost it. Never bothered to replace it. No leaks.
|
Use a propane torch to heat the washer until it glows. Let it cool and reuse it..
|
I re-use my crush washers, UNLESS I see a drip. :p
So, I end up replacing them every 4th or 5th use. YMMV of course. PS I always have spares on hand (all sizes used by Honda) just in case... |
I just replaced the drain bolt (and washer) with a "fumoto valve."
There, don't have to worry about buying more or reusing old crush washers. |
I've replaced the crush washer once in over 100,000 miles. Never had a leak. Just torque it to spec.
