Review: Tein Street Basis Coilovers

http://www.tunersports.com/images/pr...-coilovers.jpg

Got these installed by local shop Speedstar today (very professional shop! Highly recommended for anyone in the GTA area). I was initially going to purchase the Street Advance but they were on back order and I didn't feel like waiting / nor did I think I would need the damping adjustment for a street setup.

I had Eibach Pro-kits installed on stock shocks previously. Though I liked the way it looked when it was lowered, I did not enjoy the ride. I have my Teins set up so they are as low as my Pro-Kits before (I am not into the slammed look and I frequent parking lots with speed bumps / steep driveways therefore ground clearance is necessary). I absolutely LOVE how these ride. I have read some reviews saying these are too soft. However, in my opinion they are just PERFECT for street setup. They absorb imperfections of the road BETTER than the stock shock / stock spring set up. Though they do not corner completely FLAT but body-roll is reduced greatly. Handling is greatly improved for spirited driving.

Next summer I may consider taking it to the track after I get a set of new summer tires (currently on Falken 912 all seasons). I will take pictures tomorrow / next few days because it was pouring today. After my experience with these coilovers, I am never going to do lowering springs / stock shocks ever again. The ride can't compare at all.

Hello,
if you want to reduce your body roll further,
may I recommend Spoon Front Sway Bar,...
here is another thread that currently discussing about Sway Bar:

Thanks for your review and good call not trying to slam it on the ground, those are made to be used exactly how you are using them :)

After reading reviews on the Spoon Front Sway Bar I am curious and tempted to get it. I will see how the car settles in a few days and handles after my alignment. I really don't want to throw anymore money to it since I got to do my brakes and I am saving up for another bike next spring. We will see what happens next =)

Are these coilovers pretty much plug and play? Any special equipment to install?

richardhylands 12-15-2014 06:19 PM

Hey im also from the GTA. Just wondering what size rim you are running in the pics and are you fully lowered there?

I have black rpf1 in 16" and cant wait for the car to come out of storage in the spring

inkster 12-20-2014 12:44 AM

I have the Street Basis for 3.5 years now and it's still going strong. :thumbups: I assume it's plug n' play, a shop installed it for me along with camber kit without a problem.

Geoffrey Chow 06-16-2017 12:16 PM

I read that your not into slammed look but are there think coil overs able to go lower than your current height?

GE82010 06-13-2018 01:52 PM

Im thinking getting some of these coils cant wait just installed a double din on my babi

evilchargerfan 06-13-2018 05:17 PM

get em, they're price right!

Just installed these on mine a few weeks ago, replacing badly blown T1R GD coilovers.

The T1R's were pretty awful when I got them, as they were meant for a GD Fit, and I just kinda crammed them in. They're also 6k/6k so way too stiff for street driving with the GE. The fronts didn't have upper spring seats, so they clunked badly. The rears were missing the sleeve that goes in the bushings, but I was an idiot and didnt notice so I thought they were clunky because of that. Oh well.

The Tein Street Basis Z coilovers are crazy cheap for what you get. The ride even fully lowered up front is pretty comfortable, more so than stock! Body roll isn't completely flat, but damn, it's pretty good. Confidence inspiring. Suspension travel is decent, so I'm not slamming the bump stops on brick roads or anything, even all the way down. It's also really quiet! No clunks or pops.

Cons: all the way down is definitely NOT slammed, so if you're going for that look, buy something else.

Teins

Can I ask where can i get these from I seen ebay but the prices are different and how would I know if they are real. I can install them myself

malubawla 10-01-2018 09:40 AM

thanks for the review.

evilchargerfan 10-08-2018 06:16 PM

I just installed Street Advance Z's (GSB80-91AS2) on my gk5, biggest takeaway is RIDE COMFORT.... WOW! dare I say it .... they are MORE comfy than stock. MORE comfy than koni orange + tein s tech springs

in my case, I do corner flat (maybe because I have a rear sway?) .... when playing with the car on local twistys. perhaps a better test would be on a track or an auto x day.

Conclusion = for the money, these coilovers are def worth it

thanks im so hyped i finally going to see her lowered

evilchargerfan 12-13-2018 04:43 PM

if you can ... the model up, gives you the ability to adjuster damper. if the price jump isnt too much, its worthwhile (imo)

Keali'i Pomaika'i 01-14-2019 02:11 AM

How low is it lowered fully?

GE82010 03-08-2019 05:17 AM

I just order some of these 🙂 my question is is the car going to have any negative camber do I need camber plates at all or just install those coils and get it align and I’m set to go?

no plates. camber bolts = front. camber shims = rear

(check my FS thread, I have a spare set of bolts avail)

So I’m going to install these tomorrow does these come pre set already and did u guys lower the back more then the front? Would appreciate. If u give me a bit of info about how to set it up

evilchargerfan 03-13-2019 03:08 PM

they do not come preset

however, tein provides EXCELLENT instructions. be sure to set it up, exactly as the manual specifies

as far as lowering hte back more, gk5 people will naturally have that look, as oem gk rear suspension components are longer and would give that effect of being "lower"

bit of info about how to set it up = read that tein manual, like read it 2x or 3x, really get a feel for what they want you to do. I did post up pics in my thread, about how I set it up (ie, i simply followed teh manual)

Just set the height to what looks good to you. No one looking at the car is going to get a tape measure out and make sure the front is even with the back. I made mine look even but if you measured it was not. It took me a few days of tweaking here and there to get it how I liked it.

The manual they provide is very nice like Evil said. Just read it a few times and get all your measurements set before starting to install them.

GE82010 03-13-2019 04:32 PM

Thank u guys as I’ve been having problems one of the strut the thread wasn’t right had to rethread it and got one install but as soon as I tried taking off my second wheel my lock for the lugnuts cracked 😢 so I just went out to eat I’m not as hyped right now but I know these problems happend

GE82010 03-13-2019 10:26 PM

Finish them besides some hicups but they ride so smooth I’m close to where I want it lowered but overal they are nice I think that’s the touch my car needed

GolNat 03-13-2019 11:13 PM

Good deal.

Still needed put the cap on my rims but the ground is in even but soon taking it to my buddy’s house love it tho

evilchargerfan 03-14-2019 12:09 PM

lookin good!

over time, you may find yourself wanting to experiment with diff ride heights. have some fun with that. I ended up, going max low (within tein's recommend of course, which I believe was -2.4 in?) to clarify, not ALL THEY WAY low, which I think is -3 in, that'd be crazy.

I also played around with damper, 2 clicks softer, 4 clicks softer, 2 clicks harder .... and long story short, I put it back to tein's recommend as I felt that it was the best for comfort, and performance (too soft degraded performanced/introduced some body roll, and I did not like that, and too hard was simply ... too hard/not comfy)

GE82010 03-14-2019 11:53 PM

I love this suspension should of done this long time ago while I had the everything removed double checked on spark plugs they are still nice n tight yay 😃

Greg09base 09-09-2021 05:08 PM

I just got a set of these and the manual says to adjust the front and rear to 1.4” and 1.7” of thread showing. I’m assuming that will put you at the base 1.4” setting but not sure. Can anyone confirm this?

They max at 2.6" front and 2.4" rear...so in theory u should have about 1" of thread under the bottom locknut. But their 1.4 and 1.7 seem accurate considering sag from the cars weight.
