GE8: Don't do this to break-in new pads (& rotors)
Bought StopTech "Sport" brake pads and StopTech vented and slotted rotors.
Followed their break-in recommendation of 10 .8g stops in quick succession from 60-10 MPH (more like 60->20 for me). The last few stops anti-lock would not come on - as the brakes were so hot. Now the brake pedal goes nearly to the floor and the brakes are very mushy whereas before they were not mushy. Near as I can tell, the brake lines got hot and lost their hardness. Going to install SS brake lines when I have the $ and time. Anyone got any input? Yo |
When was last brake fluid change?
Change if more than 3 years old, otherwise carefully bleed your brakes. |

Were Calipers rebuilt, or at least the bores and pistons cleaned?
Was Master Cylinder Rebuilt? I always open the bleeder when I compress the caliper piston so the dirty old fluid exits via the bleeder rather than get forced back up into the system. I also empty the reservoir and fill with fresh fluid before bleeding. Its normal to need to re-bleed the brakes after braking in the pads especially if the fluid was not flushed before the break in process. If the fluid has not been flushed regularly, its fairly common that the piston seals in the calipers are due for replacement as well as cleaning the caliper bores and pistons when doing pads. I've used the same fluid you noted for street and its always held up well on my Jeep/BMW/Honda... If you boil the fluid doing the break in you will need to bleed the system again at least to flush out the calipers, the fluid does not like it. :) |

Thanks for the info. Flushed & replaced brake fluid with 330 degree wet Dot 3/4. If anyone can do better than this for the price and volume, please let me know.
Valvoline Synthetic Brake Fluid by Valvoline Professional Series 64 oz. | eBay Best, Yo I don't know about the Fit, but when bleeding the brakes on my WRX part of the OEM service manual procedure is the actuate the solenoids for the anti lock brake module. Another thing and I don't really see how it makes a difference is that there's a different order that Subaru wants the brakes bled. I assume because it's the relationship to where the module is in relation to the brake calipers, not the master cylinder to brake caliper relationship. Basically, I'm asking did you follow the service manual recommendations for flushing and bleeding the system or was there any special instructions that were missed or not followed? |
I had a seized calipar on mine, also the lube the pins. They tend to get brake dust & cause the the calipar to lose it from free floating.
BTW I don't stoptech, but done brake job on the my Fit 3x already. |
I've never had problems like that when breaking in new pads. How many miles on your car? Sounds like something else went wrong...
Also, those StopTech pads are great but they dust like a mofo. Ran them on my BMW E46, excellent pads but make a huge mess. |
