Hey all,
just joined the forums. I recently purchased a 2010 Fit, 5 speed base. It has winter tires on it. The size is 205 55 16. My speedo is off by 1 mph, which is negligible to me. But these tires really handle like crap in warm weather.
My question is - can I go to a regular all season tire of the same size ? If so, any recommendations ?

I'm getting 33mpg consistently with these tires, which is great coming from a Nissan Armada at 9mpg city ! But the handling is awful.

 

You should go to a 185/55/16 or 205/50/16. 205/55 is really tall & jiggly.

 

Thanks for the reply. I knew they weren't the stock tire size. I don't think the rims are original, either. I'm thinking that someone slapped a set of Civic wheels on her. The snow tires are new. The car was traded in around February, so I'm betting it was shortly after the tires were changed. Car has 109,000 miles. In excellent condition. Now, I gotta get some new sneakers for it and check the plugs. Those are my main concerns right off the bat.

 

I'd like to know more about the fitment of the 205/55/16 tires the OP- Hosewater referred to having on the Fit he recently bought. The winter tire construction probably had more to do with the poor handling than the size of the tires.

A 205/50/16 tire is the universally accepted replacement size for the stock 185/55/16 because the tire is one size larger coupled with the lower aspect ratio, leaves the larger/wider 205/50 tire the same overall height as the 185/55- 24" tall. The 205/55/16 is basically 2 tire sizes larger than the stock 185/55. Keeping the aspect ratio the same between the two, leaves the 205 9/10" taller plus wider.

In searching Tire Rack for all season tires in the 205/50/16 size, there are a limited number of tires available and because of the 50 aspect ratio, the choices are limited and most are V speed rated or higher. That ends up giving you a stiffer sidewall and a somewhat harsher ride. When you go to 205/55 there are a lot more choices available in that size, and a lot more lower H speed rated tires in that size too.

I see that this post started 6 mos. ago, but I'm interested in what the OP did to replace his tires. If he stayed with the 205/55 size, how did it work out?

 

I did go with OE tire size. Got 185/55/16's at Walmart - Hankook brand. So far, they are an improvement from the winter tires in both road noise and flex. Highway driving has less sway, and I can't keep my damn foot out of it. I average 70 mph, and I am consistently getting 36 mpg. I am more than happy with the car. My only concern is that the clutch feels so light, I keep thinking that it's worn out already. There's no slippage, but no real pedal feel either. As far as the winter tires - I'll be getting some 16 inch steelies, and putting them back on in a month. In the hills of Worcester Massachusetts, I'll be taking my Nissan Armada on heavy snow days. 9 mpg city, but an unstoppable beast ! We had a storm last year that was right up to the step boards on the Armada, and I went home from work fishtailing at 20 mph. I never would have made it in the Fit. I just can't give up the 4x4 in this climate. My job never closes, and I'm required to be there in a moment's notice....

 

Hosewater- thanks for the response to my post. In re-reading your original post, you mentioned you bought a base car that had the 205/55/16 tires on it. The bases came stock with, I think, 15" steel wheels. Do you have oem 16" aluminum Fit wheels on the car, or after-market wheels? The fitment questions I'm going to ask you would be skewed if your wheels don't have the oem Fit offset.

Anyway, I'm going to be replacing the tires on my '13 sport in the near future. I'm most interested in the fitment of the 205/55/16 size tires. You're the only one I've found on this forum that has run that size tire on your car. Aside from the ill handling of the snow tires, I'm really interested to know if you had any rubbing on your car- ie inside of the tires to fender liner/ or suspension or the outside of the tires to the fender, etc.- especially in front of your car when you made a hard turn?

 

Thanks for the reply. I didn't have any ill effect, such as rubbing. I did notice that the speedo was off by about 4 mph. I believe they were the stock rims from a Honda Fit Sport that someone had purchased and put on. I bought the car used, and looked on the tirerack to check the size, and noticed it wasn't standard for this model. They are Honda rims, 4x100 bolt pattern, I believe. The best that I was able to surmise was that they either came from a low-end Civic, or the Fit Sport. Also - since the car was new to me, and I wasn't used to the way it handled - I feel that I probably overreacted with the flexing issue. The sway that used to alarm me doesn't make me flinch anymore. A little sway on the highway is a non-issue for me now - and I believe that I would feel that way with either set of tires on...

 

Thanks for the info- it was very helpful. I was leaning towards buying the 205/55 tires if there was no rubbing issues, but the speedometer being off 4 mph isn't a great trade off.

 

I'm also interested to install 205/55 R16 tyres on my 2018 Jazz.
Right now, it's running 205/50 R16

 

hi anybody tried to put a 205/50r16 tyres on a 2018 ex stock rims? any feedback and suggestions. thanks
