My diy cold air intake proto

Was trying to figure out a cold air intake for my gk. I laid out a path from the fog light hole to the Helmholtz resonator hole. Here's the layout: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/76...673/hFgN4S.jpg

Used 2" abs since it's cheap, I'll now buy silicone and aluminum for the final setup. Fog light hole is 3" which I stepped down to 2" using an adapter. The adapter is attached to the fog light valence using jb weld. https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/76...912/WjKHTJ.jpg

Helmholtz box needs to be remove to make room. Two 10mm bolts but one is behind the fender liner. Its pretty easy to access. https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/76...538/9aS2Hm.jpg

This layout is easily modified. You could plug directly into the stock airbox or delete the air box entirely by connecting to the throttle body and placing a cone filter behind the fog light opening. Up to you.

Will you be making any more of these?

How much if someone wanted one?

Sorry myxalplyx, I won't be selling these. You have been an inspiration to me to figure this out so much Mahalos to you. I can send you a parts list of abs fittings that you can purchase at home depot if you want to really go diy. I just ordered a bunch of silicone and aluminum parts online and will update when they come in. I need to solve the potential hydrolock problem before I run this full time on my fit.

a'ole pilikia bigD_2015 :)

I was asking in case someone else was interested. I was also asking because if you were, I was going to possibly purchase one version of it and build another version with different sized piping. Starting at the foglight, I was going to start with 4" to 3.5" to 3" to 2.5" to 2" at the maf sensor. I have my own stupid reasons for this but that was my 'hidden' plan. Please keep up the good work and thanks for posting up this info.

When I opened up the drivers's side wheel well cover and removed the bumper, it looked next to impossible to make a cold air intake and routing the piping up to the throttle body. Since you already done it (Thanks), I'd just do the same thing exactly the way you did it. Then I'd test it against just using a cone filter and no piping.

I can solve your hydrolock problem. just add one of these condoms for the air filter.

something like this.

Hydro Shield Pre-Filter, Injen Intake Air Filter Cover, X-1033 - ViVA Performance

Any progress with this intake? How are you liking it?

bigD_2015 11-02-2015 02:28 AM

I have it hooked up to the Helmholtz opening, 2" tubes throughout. I have no proof of any performance gains, no quarter mile track here and testing on the street is pretty sketchy. Butt dyno says yes to improvement, not so much low end but in the higher revs, which makes sense due to the increased airflow. Feels like vtec kicks in earlier. Gas milage has dropped but this could be from other reasons. My set up has standing/idle temps (McD's drive through) run up to 180+ but as soon as you get moving, temps drop relatively quickly to +/- 10 above outside air. My set up runs right up behind the radiator fan so there is a lot heat exposure. I did wrap this part of the run in foil tape but it is pretty difficult to isolate the other intake components from underhood temps. Eliminating the airbox will reduce this big heat soak. So it's hard to say my current setup is better than a short ram. I would recommend improvements such as a direct run to the throttle body incorporating a PRM filter or direct throttle body run moving the filter to the fog light opening with a Perrin-like filter.

If you ever wish to modify our setup and perhaps run a hose of sorts to the foglight or the stock air intake above the grill, you can utilize this type of filter --->

Very interesting!
