Just bought a 2016 Fit // Vehicle previously towed items

Hi All,

I just purchased a 2016 Honda Fit LX with 13k miles on it. The car is pre-certified. My previous car was totaled so I had to purchase something relatively quickly. Before purchasing my Fit, I noticed that there was a tow hitch on the back but didn't think anything of it (I just asked the dealership to remove it). Only after signing all the paperwork, did I have questions about what the previous owners may have towed and if this would have caused the vehicle any harm. My main question is - is there any way to tell if previous towing has damaged or put too much strain on the car. I believe this would mainly impact the transmission. When I drive the car it seems perfectly fine, and it passed the pre-certification inspection. However is there damage or wear/tear that I may not see for some time? Unfortunately, I'm considering this a little too late, however I would really appreciate of any thoughts.

Thanks,
Jodi

Jodi, welcome to the forum!

It's possible the hitch wasn't used to tow anything -- could have been used for a hitch bicycle rack, for ex.

If you have any type of warranty from the certified pre-owned status, I'd inquire as to whether that would cover any type of damage resulting from improper towing.

if ur car is MT its possible u might be able to tell if the clutch prematurely wears out.
if cvt then no real way to tell. just hope the tranny dont break. lol

dis is why i hate buying used cars.

@bargainguy Thank you for the suggestion!
@kenchen I wholeheartedly agree - it was especially difficult buying a used vehicle in a short amount of time. A few days earlier I actually bought a used car (2015 Ford Focus Hatchback) and returned it because they notoriously have transmission issues. I will definitely be leasing or buying a new car in the future. I used to think both were a waste of money, but I realize now I would be paying for peace of mind (which I'm happy to do).

You bought a car & immediately returned it bc you didn't do research until after buying....and now ask questions about another car you just bought?

You may want to do some research before you buy the car next time.

dat makes too much sense mike!

If the hitch was 1-1/4" in all likelihood the previous owner probably used it to attach a bike rack and haul around a bike or 2. I wouldn't be concerned as long as the car shifts fine and has no premature brake wear.
