Key Fob Battery Life/Cost
 

I've replaced the batteries in my Key Fobs a few times now. It seems that the original batteries lasted a couple of years or so before the battery indicator came on in the car. Since then I've had to replace the next set of batteries more than once. I'm thinking my batteries last 6 months or so now. I couldn't locate any batteries locally, including Wal Mart and similar stores, so I decided to go to the dealer, rather than endure the low battery indicator and risk any issues with starting the car. The dealer charges $10 per battery and this is outrageous. The last straw was my most recent trip to the dealer and it finally hit me. I looked on Amazon and found a 4 pack of energizer batteries for $6. The problem is that I'm no longer a prime member, so I have to create an order large enough to negate shipping costs. This push button start and comfort access thing has it's drawbacks. The battery in my wife's 2010 Fit Sport lasts for years.

i forget which size it was, but probably the cr2032, right? i too just buy like a 10 pack from amazon and replace it when needed. owning 4 cars right now with all proximity RF transmitters (keyless entry/push button start) they all die in like 2yrs.

The pushbutton start cars must establish 2-way communication with the keyfob in order to do all the neat things they do, so the transmitter in the fob is used far more frequently than you might realize.
This is why the fob battery life is noticeably shorter.

The batteries were at my Walmart. It's easy enough to just hold the key fob to the starter button when starting the car if the fob battery is low.

That was my initial experience, but now the life has diminished considerably.

Having the indicator flash and the chime sound, drives me nuts. I'm the kinda guy who fastens my seat belt before starting the engine, to disable the audible chime. Sigh.

But be careful- I bought a big pack of hearing aid batteries (for my DVR remote) and they didn't last very long compared to the originals. I think they were fake. For something like a car fob it might be worth biting the bullet and getting them at CVS or wherever.

We bought a pack of batteries. First time change was easy. Second time, partner exploded the fob into all of its component pieces. Two hours later, reconstructed, $175 saved.

The dealer charges $13.00 to change the battery. Money well spent.
