-38 Celsius

The toaster wouldn’t start today even plugged in. When your temperature is colder then the arctic I can’t really blame it.

I'm trying very hard not to tell you it's a cold and dreary 55 F here in Tampa Bay.

Seriously, be safe to all of you in these insane temps. If it's any consolation, I've seen big flocks of robins heading north already.

-38° C? Not quite good enough! I woke up the other morning and found that we had hit the magic number of -40° C (= -40° F). I went out to the garage and put the key in the Fit and it immediately started. Now the garage is stand alone, unheated, uninsulated, and the car wasn't plugged in so it was nice to see the quick and easy start. In fairness, the temp in the garage would have been slightly warmer since ground heat radiates up and warms the garage a few degrees over the outside temp.

I can't stop thinking about the old days when people ran on conventional 10W30 oil ... maybe 5W30 in the winter ....with the old ignition and fuel systems (pre-electronic) and cars would go rrrrrrr....rrrrr....rrrrr....rrrr as you tried to get them started in this kind of weather before the battery died. Much rarer to see that these days.

Incidentally I'm north of you a bit, on the lake.

Nice! Yeah my friends Jeep boosted me after we pushed it out of the carport. Did a 15km drive and x fingers she will vroom vroom tomorrow. Honestly I can handle cold but -40 is too Churchill for me minus the scalping polar bears.

Maybe I'm easily impressed.
But I think one of the most impressive aspects of almost all modern automobiles is how well they are designed to withstand and operate in extreme temperatures on both sides of the equation. Extreme heat and extreme cold.

Childhood memories include seeing Dad and other intrepid motorists drain their feeble antifreeze mixture every cold night, then refill it when starting in the morning.

It's really worth getting one of those portable jump starters these days. This is the one I have:
Saves you the hassle of finding someone else to jump you and they're so compact. I helped a coworker last week start his Acura TL with a 3.5L engine. I let him hold onto it and he was able to recharge his cell phone while he waited for the tow truck to eventually get him. My jump starter would start the car, but ended up his alternator went bad so his car wouldn't stay running for very long.

A final update. Warrantied the battery on my lunch break. It was dead frozen this morning and wouldn’t even boost. Slight bulge on the sides. Hopefully no more polar vortexes for a while lol.

It was mid 20s when I tried to start my car today. Battery sounded weak but it did start on the first try after sitting for about 10 hours.

12 deg F... 2 of my windows have stop opening on my brand new 2018 Fit EX.

Had no issues starting here in Toronto land but she sounds a bit like a tractor for the first few minutes.

It was 91 degrees in Gainesville Florida 2 days ago..We are setting records for the warmest Feburary EVER and the brutal cold weather up north is the reason I can't live there. Snowbirds got it right!
