shift up and shift down lights?

anyone ever see these shift up and shift down lights ever light up during their drive of the manual? I’ve only seen them for a second when starting the engine. What are they for?

They are there to tell you when to shift for optimal fuel economy

I.E. a total annoyance.

Fitty18 02-13-2019 09:56 AM

Hmm, but I never see them light up at all during driving. Can they be enabled or disabled in a menu selection somewhere? I'm just wondering if it's disabled or defective.

In the Owner's Manual, (page 426), it only says it comes on when an upshift or downshift is recommended. (*if equipped).

Your driving style might not make the indicator come on.

They can also be turned on and off. Most likely yours are set to off.

Any idea how to turn it on and off?

My dealer did it for me when I bought mine (I got a checklist of things I wanted on and off). I think with the EX you can do it in the dash but if you don't have an EX you have to take it to the dealer to have features turned on and off.

Why would you want it on?

I do have an EX. I was just curious as to the feature and wanted to know how to turn it on/off. I don't need it on... It's just interesting because I've taken the car close to red line but have never seen the "shift up" light and I have gotten very close to stalling on like 3rd or 4th but have not seen the "shift down" light.

Again, it is not turned on.

Unless things have changed since the 2015 model, that feature is only on the paddle shift CVT simulated manual shift 7 speed with the ECO button engaged. But since I have a REAL 6 speed manual.

i wondered about that ... We '15 MT owners only get that annoying ambient meter that cannot be shut off. I had a shift light like this on my '87 S-10 Blazer, also annoying.

Agreed ... pretty useless

Nothing like that on my 2018 Sport. Not missing it either, I'd want that off.

Howie_Feltersnatch 02-15-2019 11:58 AM

I have a 18EX MT, i see them when I start it up, but never looked in to turning them on.

wistlo 02-20-2019 12:43 AM

The user manual for the 2018 EX only says "if equipped", but the press release is pretty definitive. Up/down on CVT only, and not on LX:

I figured it out over the weekend... The down shift light came on when I had adaptive cruise on, it was set to 75 mph, traffic slowed to 30 mph and I was still in 6th gear rolling down the road. I haven't stayed in a lower gear long enough to see if the "up" light comes on yet.

ETA: I made another run to 75 mph then coasted down to 30 mph while in 6th gear and light did not come on.

were both runs at 30 mph (with light and without light responding) on level ground, or were there varying road grades involved?

FWIW I've never seen the lights on my 2018 MT after startup.

urbie4 06-13-2019 08:04 PM

I have no idea if this is true, but I'd have guessed that the shift light (on any car) is one of those things they do to inflate their EPA mpg stats -- e.g., "If you shift when the light says to, you get 48mpg" or whatever. We used to have an '89 Corvette with a stick, and when it left the factory, the transmission had this thing that locked out 2nd and 3rd gear -- unless you were accelerating hard, you had to shift from 1st directly into 4th! GM thoughtfully equipped with an easily accessible pull-off wire to disable the feature -- and my assumption is that 100% of owners pulled off the wire as soon as they got the car... but for EPA mileage testing, it was there, so the car helped GM meet CAFE standards and blah-blah.....
