Lower Shield and Oil Change
 

I just changed the oil in my son's 2020 Fit. Whoever decided that those plastic screws should be used at the rear of the lower shield is an idiot. The six Phillips screws come out easily enough, but the two plastic ones just don't cooperate. On my 2015 Fit, I rigged up a more mechanical way to detach the rear of that shield. When the weather gets better, I'll do the same for this 2020.

I know that some of you leave the shield off, but I'm going to try to keep it on both Fits. It was about 35° F outside, with snow on the ground. Those two screws prolonged the misery.

If I remember correctly, if you pry the center portion of those plastic screws out about 1/4" from the outer ring with a small screwdriver then the whole thing pretty much drops right out. Replace with new screws and reverse the process, press the outer ring into the hole and then press the center portion in to lock it in place. You can get bags of those plastic screws on Amazon. Slightly different styles but the only spec which really matters is that they have to fit a 10 mm hole. Don't try and re-use these, they won't hold as well the second time around.

I did the trans and engine change on the Fit yesterday. It also has the same setup.
Is there a solution that's NOT using those screws? What did you do for your 2015 to make it easier?
Even a simple hand twist-type screw would be much appreciated!

As a side-note, I replaced the trans fluid with Royal Purple Synchromax.
After a few short trips, I've notice the effort is easier and overall performance is smoother (40k miles on car).
I'd recommend it over the stock Honda fluid :nod:

You can use long ty-raps instead. You might have to drill a couple holes in a slightly different location to make them easy to use. Of course they'll have to be cut off and discarded every time you want to drop the cover.

Right. I remember that beinmg an alternativer. As a matter of fact, I think I put them on my son's 2019 Fit that was totaled by a truck.

I think I used something to keep that pin in place when the clip is pulled out.
