cabin air filter replacement
 

Short version of this question: where to buy a cabin air filter for my 2015 Honda Fit, and can I replace it myself with minimal car skills/knowledge?

Longer version: I bought my 2015 Honda fit about a year ago, and a week ago the maintenance wrench light came on for the first time. Because it was only calling for an oil change and tire rotation, I took the car to a Mr. Tire location that I know and trust to have the service done. The person there showed me that the cabin air filter was very dirty - makes sense, I live in a city and have used air conditioning a lot - and said that I should change it, but that they didn't have the part. Another employee offered to pick up an air filter at another Mr Tire location and change it for me the next day. I said no because in the past I've always changed the air filter myself (in a previous 2001 Corolla), and wouldn't have had time the next day to wait around at the Mr. Tire anyway.

Now I am trying to find an air filter that I can buy myself - Advance Auto parts says that it is too new for them to order, and that I should contact Honda directly. What's more, I didn't see anything in my owner's manual that tells me the location of the cabin filter or how to access it. Does this mean I really have go back to Mr. Tire and schedule an appointment for them to change my air filter for me? Say it ain't so.

Usually the cabin air filter is in the glove compartment and they are easily accessed.

Why not buy one from an online Honda dealer...Bernardi, HondaPartsCheap, H and A, College Hills? They are not THAT expensive.

(Remember they contain charcoal, so you can't just buy a pleated furnace filter at Home Depot, cut it to size, and get the same effect. Not that some folks don't do that...)


PS, on our Hondas, I vacuum the cabin filters once a year and replace them every OTHER year.

Go to Rockauto.com and you'll be amazed how much cheaper filters are there

For sure, but again, you need to compare apples to apples. The cheapest filters usually do not contain the activated charcoal as the OEM filters do.

Thanks, everyone. I wasn't sure if the companies I found online were real/reputable/serious about their filters fitting a 2015 Fit, but I feel better about that now.

My question still remains about accessing the cabin air filter. I tried "squeezing" the sides of the glove box as in this video: , but nothing happened and it doesn't feel like anything would. Has anyone changed the cabin air filter themselves in a 2015 Fit?

It looks like only acdelco is now available on RockAuto for the '15. On older models rockauto has had the activated charcoal filters and even those were $20 instead of $40-60. They will tag which manufacturer is the OEM supplier if available.

You have to squeeze in on the sides near the top. There is a ridged bumper on each side, squeeze right below. I made a thread detailing how I accessed mine for cleaning:

Thanks, 2Rismo2. With your instructions, I did manage to find what was behind the glove box. Now I'll order the filter from Bernardi and hopefully replace it next week!

Just a short update...Upon really comparing engine air filter builds and even higher quality furnace filters I would never trust a furnace filter in the engine. Likely the pleats would be flattened immediately and result in poor engine air intake/damage/performance you name it. Cabin air filter to me is a different story. Much less air flow, power so I did end up chopping a furnace filter to size and plunked it in. Little appreciable difference in the cabin air that I can see. Cheers

Last cabin air filters I ordered from Bernardi came through damaged from poor packaging on their part. First one had a hole punched through it (damaged from throwing it in the same box with 4 quarts of oil with no protection except a poly bag). I sent it back and requested a replacement. The replacement had a tear in it.


I won't be ordering cabin filters from Bernardi again.

I've ordered many filters from Bernardi, never had an issue...

i ordered a cabin filter from amazon for i think 12 bucks fit just fine and is still clean after almost a year.

I have, and its very easy. Its a similar door that holds the filter in place compared to the GE/GD models,

You can see it on my video below at 11:45 when I did my stereo install. Its very easy. Also, buy OEM, its got the charcoal in it, and this was my filter at 19k. it should have been changed a few thousand miles prior. I dont have a garage and its outside all the time so that may have contributed. Either way, its an easy replacement. I think I paid 11 bucks or so USD.

about 3 dollars us, it is activated charcol and about 1/8 inch not as long but you could put a foam spacer it. i didnt because i dont think it will bypass air. is exact width

Just buy the Honda Cabin Filter from the dealer.
Don't fool around trying to save a few $$ on aftermarket.
I know its expensive, but you only need it every 20 to 25K miles.
I just did mine at 21K. It was very dirty.
It was $26.00 plus tax at my Honda dealer parts.
It looks like it should cost $10.00 but it's expensive to print "Honda" on things--high ink cost.:puke:

Easier to replace 2015 FIT than my 2009 FIT.

Other people have described how to do it, but here is my 3 cents:

1. Sit down in the Passengers Seat.
2. Slide the seat back as far as it will go.
3. Empty all contents out of glove compartment onto Driver's Seat.
4. Take 2 hands and depress the sides of the glove box WHILE pushing it down toward the floor.
5. Take a flash light and shine it on the inside.
6. You will see a square door to a compartment with the Filter.
7. Take 2 hands and depress the clips lightly on both sides of the door and pull the door toward you.
8. Slide the old filter out and throw it on the ground. NOTE the UP arrow on the old filter for the direction of air flow.
9. Take the new filter out of the plastic and make sure that the UP arrow faces you, slide it into the compartment.
10. Take the square door and push it in until it clips on both sides. Test it by trying to pull it out--it should not be loose. It should lock in place.
11. Depress both sides of the glove compartment and swing it back up and closed.
12. Put everything back in the glove compartment.
13. Turn the car on and ventilation on and breath clean air again.
14. Tell your friends that you just installed an air filter behind the dash and they will be impressed.

If the filter looked like that, I'd change it more often...

the one i bought off ebay for a few dollars for the yaris came in a OEM toyota box, i guess there was a surplus somewhere. I couldnt bring myself to pay dealer prices!
