??? Mugen drop-in filter question???

okay, got a noob question for ya. here is goes..... I just got my Mugen drop-in filter yesterday, took a good look at it and couldnt help but notice the sponge-like layer on the back of it which seem to come on and off VERY easily. my question is this, i dropped it in and rode around for a while (slight difference noticed) and when i got home my gut told me to check it and i did, the sponge piece had come off and was just laying inside the air-box. i know its not gonna get sucked into the intake but should it be coming off the filter??? and what would happen if i took it off altogether, would it help by giving even MORE airflow??? any answers regarding this would be great.

question: is this thing worth the 110 dollars? as opposed to a k&n filter that is. i'm contemplating getting one but i want to know if the difference is substantial enough to make it worth twice the price. mugen and their prices.... the quality of their products is unprecedented from what i've heard though

a local guy told me his fit was running rich when he had his mugen filter in. If you want to buy his I think he is selling for $50 shipped. Only in the car for 2/3months.

JHP has been known to have their information incorrect. A couple years ago I bought several things from their website and once I got them I found out in fact they were not even for my car even though their website said differant. I raised a lot of hell and they changed their website from choosing your chassis to how it is now.

That picture on jhp is definately incorrect. When we got my filter we tried to install it foam up because thas where the mugen logo is, but it wont even install that way. Also on the filter it says UP as you can see in the pic Composimo posted.

I was actually surprised about how much more low end power i got. It's not a whole lot but it's enough to notice a difference. Definitely worth the money!

Someone told me that the Mugen is actually a rebranded K&N. Not sure if that's true but there ya go.

It looks like a K&N type filter with a 3M scrub pad as a primary layer of filtration.

Either way $110.00 is for a name. A good quality drop-in shouldn't cost more than $50. I have seen filters about this size on lawn equipment! I'm leaning towards the HKS Super Hybrid for $36.00.

High price isn't always just because it has a badge. Normally the high price is because they already have established they have high quality and results. I have never had an issue with any mugen, their price may be high to some but I don't feel they are.

Good luck with that. We each have our thoughts on these filters. Mine personally is it does what I want. I also feel that the best way is to use all the parts a company makes because they were all made to work with each other. Let everyone know how you like that HKS.

That may be because you are a dealer. More power to you. I'm glad to see someone out there selling quality parts that make power.
Perhaps my description was taken the wrong way. It wasn't intended to insult the manufacturer. It is a brilliant Idea, using foam and pleated cotton gauze. I'm just a consumer trying to make a wise purchase. :-)

i would clean it after pollen season. i would clean it after any major dust/dirt/pollen/smoke type situation. my fiance's fit's OEM paper filter is very dirty after the fires in southern california last year from all of the smoke.

me again, anyway.....the pollen season is over and im about to clean my Mugen drop-in but i have a question. when i had my Sentra i bought a K&N drop-in and cleaning it involved rinsing it over water then applying some "filter oil".....well i dont have this "filter oil" anymore so my question is this, will running the filter over water then just letting it dry be enough?
