what type of oil are people using for their GEs?

i am using 10W-30. i heard thats a little too thick for our cars? and that I should be using 5w-20?

suggestions?

idk if i would beleive it or not.... iam like you, i use 10w-30 full synthetic in like all my cars, even if it requires 5w-20.

 

I was planning on running valvoline synpower 5w-20 for the first change, then switch to 5w-30 after that for added wear protection. I stocked up on that oil because kragen.com has it on sale for $3.99/qt and valvoline has a engine warranty rebate that cuts the price in half!

 

I'm currently running mobile 1 5w-20 and I just picked up a jug of mobile 1 0w-30. Ill let you guys know of the differences next oil change.

 

I'm using Motul 5w-30. Andy, you get can a 5-gallon jug from Elton.

 

Mobil 1 Full Syn. 5w-30 here for the past two oil changes...car runs great.

take back my statement.. after a lot of research it seems like 0w-20 is praised on many truck forums, not to mention toyota and such gives its approval on the use of 0w-20... might first oil change might be 0w-20 after all.... unless someone can find on why it would hurt the car.

 

Tighter tolerances need more viscosity. I use Mobil 1, 5w20 in both my Fits. I've used Mobil 1 10w30 in a few cars over the last 10 years. They ran great to the 200k mark and junked for other problems other than engine.

 

Honda 0w20. Various VOAs ive found have led me to believe that this is stout oil so im sticking with it

If I lived in a strictly warm climate country I would use the higher weight, also.

 

you lose gas mileage using thicker oil, i would stick with 5w20 or 0w20 both to maximize fuel economy and I just stick with factory recommendations. I run Mobil 1 5w20 or Amsoil 0w20. full synthetic. OEM filter is made by fram so i stopped using Honda oil filters. I use mobil 1 or purolator Pure 1 PL 14610 is the part number for the purolator.
Motul, Amsoil and Mobil 1 are all very comparable

 

Amsoil themselves are proponents of using other weights even when 5w-20 is spec'd, and that going up a grade isn't going to cause a easily noticeable mpg difference. Obviously going to a 5w-30 isn't the same as going to a 60wt.

Due to a good sale, I stocked up on valvoline synpower 5w-20 and 5w-30 for when the FIT it gets more miles on it. From what I read I don't expect a noticeable MPG difference when I switch to 5w-30 (but I will monitor it).

 

The 5w20 in a synthetic oil will do a fine job of lubricating and produces less drag on on the oil pump increasing efficiency and performance.... I have used different weight oil in my Fit and 2 other vehicles that called for the use of 5w20 and noticed a loss of fuel mileage and acceleration with 5w30... It is the film strength of the oil at operating temperature that is critical and a higher viscosity oil doesn't always have more film strength... Oil has three jobs to perform, cool, clean and lubricate and in an engine as precision built with tight tolerances as Honda builds a lighter oil does a better job.... I wouldn't use it in a turbo charged, air cooled or engine with roller bearings but with 5 PSI boost from a supercharger I have no complaints from using 5w20, though I would consider up to 10w30 when I up the boost to 10 PSI if there is an increase in oil temperature.

 

According to Amzoil, "This increased fuel economy is virtually undetectable to the average motorist without the use of specialized engine monitoring and testing equipment under strictly controlled test track driving when compared to a 5W-30, 10W-30 or a 0W-30 viscosity motor oil."

I read that thanks for sharing..... Did you notice toward the end of the text that it was mentioned that they make a XL5w20 that improves power, performance and fuel mileage in high and low temperatures? On an engine as small as the Fit has, it doesn't take much to slow it down and though they say otherwise they finish by saying that their 5w20 does the same things that I said I had experienced by using 5w20

 

so the consensus is 5w-20. ok i will try that next time.

 

10W-30 full synthetic, had an oil change 4 months ago and at 50% LIFE, Honda said I won't need another til 15%

 

Do you notice significant MPG difference with the 10w-30 so far?
