You are right, lengthwise, the parking lot is smaller than the Fit. Probably meant for the Smart car

Actually I think the Fit looks very deceptive in size, it looks small, but actually not that small, the short hood, and short trunk rear of the rear seats makes it deceptively smaller than it really is.
For 5 regular sized adults (~ 5' 8"), it is very comfortable inside.
