Ive had it!! Custom carpet DIY, <$125 anyone interested?

So, today I got fed up and decided to fix my carpet situation.
Its thin, hard to clean and smells from soaking up water. I looked all over the internet and forums and could not find custom molded carpet.

So, I did my research and think I got the fix. I went to home depot and found black outdoor carpet, decent quality and about $4.50 per linear foot.

I ripped out my old carpet, and started measuring and chalking to cut.

Tomorrow is the big install day, I am even replacing the spare hatch with new wood and carpeted piece over that.

Anyway, I am putting together a parts list with prices, instructions, pics and if I can even a few templates to cut the carpet.
I may start selling the kits if anyone is interested but i will get the info together first.

More to come..

take lots of pics i want to see this PLEASE

i'm going to have to do something. with all the commuting i'm doing now and when i do have to sit in stuck traffic (ty I-4/I-75 and crazy ppl) I've noticed I'm moving my left foot around a lot more and causing wear.

I imagine it would be even worse already if I had a manual like my last car....

Me too.

After winters in Calgary there is a lot of salt left in the carpets, and it's very difficult to get out.

Ok so, I got all the stuff together, tooks pics of the floor pan and vacuumed and cleaned thoroughly. Picked up the rest of the materials including sound and heat insulation. Tomorrow, i will start putting it in and post pics mid week. If I can I will also do the spare hatch but if it is raining I have to wait until a sunny day so it doesnt warp.

Ok, so I installed the carpet the other day...and surprisingly everything was going great until the last cut. It took about two hours of measuring and cutting and using adhesive backing to get it to this point. Then I just rushed to get it done and when I threw on the console, i noticed the carpet was cut 1.5 inches shorter than the console covers ugh!
Good news, worst part is over, and I can use the old flat non-molded carpet as a template, it looks pretty darn good and seems much more durable and easier to mold than anticipated.
Bad News: I have to pay 36 bucks for another 8 foot section of carpet because I was in a rush.

Here are some pics, fire away if you have questions.
The lighting may not be great it was bright out.

What's your overall impression? I'm off work Sunday and I'm seriously debating at least grabbing enough to cover my driver's side floor. Beyond the patience aspect of doing it all, have you noticed better sound dampening or noise reduction with the thicker carpet?

What's the style name of that carpet? When I looked at my local HD, I only found stuff with a stiff backing. With a style name, I can order the right stuff to get the flexibility needed! Thanks!

wrinkles, kinks?

So you got flat carpet to conform to all the weird curves like the transmission "hump" etc. ? I thought only a molded carpet would conform to those lines. any wrinkles or kinks in the finished product? I too searched online for a better than OEM replacement. NADA! PICs of the completed car interior?

um i'll blame the nyquil that wouldn't nite nite me

but i started this last night because i got so pissed off when i found yet more water in my back seat area that i pretty much unplugged my seats/console/door sills and just ripped the carpet right up.

I was able to get the driver side in place for the most part and the console back on. I'm leaving the rest for tomorrow morning/afternoon and I'll have to hit up home depot (or lowe's if it's closer) to get some kind of cushion/setting for the back. I didn't really notice any cushioning up front and i'm debating on leaving what i have in place up there....but i'll know more once i get some sleep.

I'll post up pics, etc. once i can.

hopefully i won't fubar this

Yea if I ever get around to finishing I will LOL. Driver side looks nice and then I had to do some stuff around the house. Feels nicer on my feet, gotta tweak the passenger side and get some solid pieces for the insulation in back

Can this be done????

I'm not in need of a carpet re-placement, however, I would luv to see this one pulled off with a nice clean wrinkle free and solid install with no air pockets, folds or overlapp'n materials....

I thought this could only be accomplished with a vehicle specific carpet kit...especially utilizing a thick carpet comparable to the oem product...

yea don't expect that really clean look from me. honestly i think at this point it's not the greatest on the passenger side and all, but it's a lot better than what i had in there.

the back is going to take some time since i'm airing it all out before i re-insulate/pad and put down the back side.

at least my car is finally smelling way better than it did. that insulation under the stock carpet was disgusting

i'm really hoping Wimbers will chime back in on here with pics and supplies that he used.

I found his carpet from Home Depot (I think) but I really am unsure at this point how to proceed with the back. Solid foam, sound insulation material, etc. b/c there are several ways to go back there (including none at all).

that's how it looks installed on the driver's side.

the passenger side is a bit more rigged (aka fugly) but still passable.

i didn't realize it, but even that side had holes and i barely had anyone riding shotgun but the wife. forget "thick" oem carpet, i really am disappointed how sad our carpet really is compared to some of the other econo boxes i've seen.

Awright! Better looking than what I had imagined so far...hope the rest of the car turns out to yur liking... But that other option you mentioned shouldn't be an option...can you picture in your mind how much road noise would be reverberating in yur ride if you did not put anything on the rear floors?

Alrighty then now this is just a thought here but if ya went to a carpet ware house and go buy 1 yard wide of the thickest pile carpet they got in what ever color your heart desired layed out the OEM carpets traced and cut exactly, right. Then take'm down to your local upolstery shop to get the edges bound maybe in a dif. kolor? Say red carpet w/black trim. Hummmh?

might be an option Perrenoud

Another thought i had was to get some very strong, but pliable carpet and simply spray and stick it to the OEM carpet. Then follow up along the underlaying holes and cut.

Depending on how all this shakes out, that might be another try I give it.

As for the road noise from the back, I honestly didn't tell any difference today when I ran the wife to the Honda dealership for her Civic and that was 2/3 on the highway. I'll listen tomorrow during my work commute and see if it's a noticeable difference or if I've actually gone that deaf already.

How are you going to keep the new carpet in its place and have some sort of mold like the OEM one?
