I have a 2013 fit base automatic. I am going to travel about1400 miles with my 2 dogs. Is it safer to use back seats with some kind of dog safety belt? any long distance pet travelers out there? thank you

 

I also have two dogs. I travel with them, but not that far. But I would never let them in the car without some kind of harness. I drop the rear seats down and put pet carriers in the back. The ones I have fit side-by-side with the doors facing the rear hatch. Each dog gets its own carrier. This obviously changes if you have bigger dogs, but for small to medium sized dogs, this is ideal.

We only have one, and we had to deal with car sickness and all sort of dog related issues with the dogs during our trips.
Vets recommend to let dog sits as back as possible, to reduce sickness and I think the best investment was the dog's safety belt, coz you never know when you may have some sudden break... and Our Dog like to look out the window...
Another good investment was this back seats dog carriers, coz they will prevent you from cleaning anything on your seats ( we had a vomiter that in one time made quite a mess.. lol), they are also good, they avoid the dogs to "fell" into the back's seat leg space ( just in case)....

 

Lowering the back seat and using wire training crates work out well.. We have put our dogs in the crates at night inside the house for years. When they are demanding too much attention or it's time for bed we say "crate" and they both know to get into their separate crate, so it is a natural environment for them.. Carry plenty of water for them and be prepared to stop when they need to poop, pee and stretch their legs while on the road.. Try to feed them at the time they regularly eat but not as much as they normally do..
