Honda says that the peg can't be obtained, and the entire cover needs to be replaced, at a cost of more than $300 Canadian. The parts expert said that I might be able to find a blind rivet for it at a local crafts store, but they only have "eyelets". The unique feature about the pegs is that, relative to the shaft, they have a big circumference contacting the cover. All the better to distribute the force, and make it less likely that some inadvertent force will damage the material.
I still have the bottom piece, but not the top piece. From what I can see, I believe that the shaft is integral with the top piece. In fact, the shaft looks like a pair of legs that reach through the hole, then snap outword to hang on to the bottom piece. This doesn't seem consistent with what I've found about blind rivets or eyelets online. I haven't been able to coax apart any of the remaining pegs for closer examination, but then I haven't tried very hard for fear of damaging another peg.
Does anyone know where I can get such a peg?
