Importing Cars!

Ok, looking for a straight forward checklist on how to do this. Assuming I pick the car up from the US, what is the step by step method to avoid running into trouble?

One of the biggest things for me is private insurance; how do you get the insurance company to agree to put plates & insurance on a US car that may need to be modified with DRL's and other requirements once it gets back to Canada?

What about the dash guages and odometer? Is it a government requirement to replace them with metric or just a nice thing to have?

I have heard at least a dozen ways on how to bring cars in, if anybody has practical experience please post up below.

Hey sweet, this is a pretty good resource.

What about insurance? Is like a catch-22 when I read the rules around it;

In order to get insurance you must first have the car registered; in order to register you must first prove you own the car and pass an inspection; in order to pass an inspection you must first take the car to an inspection station in Alberta; in order to have the car in Alberta you must first have insurance....

Is there some kind of temporary insurance you can get to bring the car into Canada under?

This may be a long read but it should still offer some good relevant info

That is a pretty good article. I am seriously considering going over the Border for something with the price differences in the thousands.

This would be a nice pick up, at least 10-15K cheaper than here;
