Is 5W-20 spec'd globally or is it North America only?
What is the recommended oil viscosity outside of the US and Canada?
For EU Jazz owners, is there an ACEA oil spec that you should follow? |
There are MANY different viscosities and specification of oils for different parts of the world. Take a look under specifications and maintenance schedules.

I don't know much about oil, so can I put something else other than 5w-20? I read a lot of posted about it, and I still don't get it.

so can I put something else other than 5w-20? But if you can find the 5W-20, go with that. You may have to go to an autoparts store to buy it. Hondas, Fords, and Chryslers have all spec'd 5W-20 since about 2002...it's not THAT difficult to find. |

You can use 5W-30 without worry, at a slight expense of some fuel economy. It is commonly available in the USA.
I tried this in my 1.5 L Toyota. The factory spec was 5w-30, then Toyota issued a TSB changing to 5w-20. I tried both. I had 5w-30 in it, then change to 5w-20. Used the same oil brand, identical filter, drove the same day on the same stretch of road. ScanGauge read between 0 and 3 MPG better at various sections after changing to 5w-20. Mostly 0-1 MPG. But the Toyota didn't seem to like the lighter weight- noticed more valve train noise. No such noise with the Fit running 5w-20 so no reason not to use it.

Thanks for the info. While we're on the subject of oil specs, I'm assuming that Honda MTL is the universal gearbox lube for these things?

The NEW Honda MTL is even better. I changed the MT fluid in my CR-V and I really could tell the difference. I expect to put it in the FIT this summer, after the car gets about 15K miles on it. |
Bumping this thread. Still wondering what oils are specified for the Fit/Jazz in other countries. I haven't really found anything so far. I never saw any viscosities listed in the manuals to which Claymore linked.
