2008 Fit - rusted out license plate bolts
 

Hi,
New here but been lurking for a while already.

Just acquired a 2008 Fit and while changing the plates, I broke both plastic screws. When the plate was removed I was surprised to see such a poor design. It seems like standard, non rust proof bolts were simply soldered to the tailgate. As you can see, the rust has started to spread to the tailgate metal. Screws now won't fit in the holes. I live up north and tons of salt are spread in the streets each winter.

What are my options? Should I cut out all the rusted out parts and do some metalwork? I've never done that before, are there some easier ways?

Also, the entire bottom part of the driver door is rusted out. How does that happen? Is it common on Fits?

Rest of the car is fine!

There are many threads on rust and Fit GE. Unfortunately Honda (but also other brands) are not the same anymore.

I would try and cut them off or grind them down then maybe just double side tape the plate. I double side tape my front plate too.

I might drill the nut part out some and use plastic wall anchors and screws (stainless screws if you want to be really neat about it) and washers if the screw heads aren't big enough. If the rust concerns you, sand down the area around it, put a little JB-weld on (if it goes beyond the surface at all), and put some paint over the spot. Since it's behind the license plate, I would not worry about doing a particularly neat job—but that's just me. Other people are more meticulous in such matters.

I had a similar problem where the metal around the bolt rusted and made a large hole. I ended up just going to buy a new bolt and nut to use and utilized 2 large diameter washers. I used zinc coated bolts and added some silicone to hopefully prevent any rust damage in the future. Its held up for about a year now.
