Quick questions regarding ATF drain and fill

Hi everyone...

I'm a happy owner of a 2010 Honda Fit Sport (purchased as a Certified Pre-Owned in late 2013). I have just this year started to do my own oil changes, and this past weekend I did my first Automatic Transmission Fluid drain and fill. The car has 55K miles on it and is running fine...I did the fill two times (as opposed to 3x or 4x for the full "flush").

Question...either here or at another Fit forum, a poster recommended buying a new funnel every time an ATF drain is performed. This seems a bit excessive to me. If I use the same funnel every time, and don't use it for anything else, shouldn't that be ok?

Another question...I'm just curious: when the local Honda dealerships do the ATF procedure (and charge $100 or so), are they doing a full 4x drain and fill, or do they just do it the one time? I would imagine that if they did a 4x drain and fill, they'd charge closer to $200, given that they'd be using about 12 quarts of the ATF fluid.

I took my 2011 Honda Civic to the dealer for a 60K service in 2014, and they charged $600+ dollars (oil change, ATF change, coolant change, tire rotation, spark plugs, etc.). I felt completely ripped off....

Thanks to everyone here for the advice, etc. Never thought I'd start doing my own fluid changes at the ripe old age of 53! :)

old oil changer

My guess is that they just do the ATF once. I think it would be both easy and enough to do it once each oil change. By the way, Jim, in ten years you won't believe how young 53 seems, trust me, enjoy your youth!

I just clean my funnels right before I use 'em. Never a problem.

Obviously you were never a broke college student who owned cars that needed repair all the time! :o

But no matter, it's PROOF that folks get wiser as they get older. :rotfl:

One wonders if the dealer changed the AT filter.

Probably not, since there is no recommended replacement interval on it.

The small external filter can be replaced anytime. There is no internal trans filter as on American cars.

Stopped by the dealership last night...confirmed that they do a single "drain and fill" (3-4 quarts). And for that they charge over $100. Insane.
