Possible cheaper source of tranny fluid from RockAuto by ASIN?
Hello, this is my first thread!
I'm wondering if anyone has tried the AISIN brand DW1 fluid they sell on rockauto? Its about 5 dollars per quart. On the bottle it says OEM formula, and it also is labeled that "AISIN is the manufacturer of many transmissions worldwide". It might just be a rebranding thing, Honda taking ASIN's fluid, I'm not sure. I am super new the the Fit life, but a long time Honda driver. In my opinion, stick with Honda OEM for all fluids... I know what you are saying with Aisin being the OEM manufacturer, but I have been too scared to test it myself. In honesty, the way I think about it your ATF is going to last 15 - 30k... the cost difference is negligible. This doesn't make it easier to deal with stealership pricing in the moment, but overall... OEM has NEVER given me an issue and I have read tons of people's experiences about aftermarket liquids. Just to share a bit more - NGK for ignition (spark, wires, etc.) and MOOG & KYB for suspension. Rockauto.com is a great source for parts, but I think there are some general rules to live by when it comes to aftermarket. |
I don’t really understand the need to get cheap fluids for critical parts that need to last a long time.
I mean how often does the transmission fluid need to be changed? 60k miles? 100k miles? It’s not like an oil change every 3k-18k miles. On a side note, I’ve bought one part from Rockauto, a splash guard to replace the one that got damage from my road trip some 7 years ago. I still haven’t swapped it, since the part I got from RA is flimsy as fuck and I’d rather use a damaged splash guard than that crap from RA. |
FWIW, DW-1 is ~$6.00/qt + shipping at the online Honda dealers as I type this (April 2018).

$8-9 bucks for transmission fluid is not expensive. Ford makes a full synthetic fluid that's $18-25 a quart depending where you buy it.
Don't cheap out on transmission fluid. Fluid is cheap. A transmission is not. |

I’ve used a few different transmission oils in my 2013 Fit. No issues yet. I used Honda OEM for a 4 drain and fill at 30K. At 60K I used Walmart SuperTech Low Viscosity Full Synthetic transmission oil for a 2 drain and fill and put a new Honda OEM filter on. At 90K I used Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle transmission oil for a 2 drain and fill. At 120K, another 2 drain and fill with Castrol and a Honda OEM filter. All oils explicatly met the Honda DW-1. I did notice that the Castrol oil takes longer to warm up in cold weather and shifts more abruptly until warmed up. Next time, I will use the Walmart and do a 4 drain and fill. I’ll use Walmart from here on out. It’s just under $6/qt, meets the required standards, and shifts just fine. As long as the oil meets Honda’s requirements you’re good. It’s like engine oil... meet the requirements and you’re good. Also, I drive the heck out of my car. I drove 65,000 miles as a courier last year alone. I’m on track to drive just as much this year as well. |
The original question was is anyone could verify Aisin as the OEM provider, unfortunately I don't think that anyone will know that answer. You are probably right, but unless someone is a Honda tech... no way to confirm.
Off topic - first gearbox flush (MT) for a new car at 5k? I will change the engine oil at 1000, per usual break in period... but wasn't sure about the tranny? Ideas? |

A friend who never changed his until 80K miles on his Acura RSX couldn't believe the difference in shift quality! PS: Some Honda owners like GM Syncromesh MT fluid, but I don't know how much it costs. Now: :offtopic: |
Well I've done some research before I poured the fluid, and it does appear to be a different formula. Possibly higher or lower quality, I do not know, but it is NOT the OEM mixture. I also found the SDS for both fluids and the flashpoint is different. I have also discovered AISIN is a Toyota tranny manufacturer.
