What does disabling the governor do to your car?
I am not a mechanic so I am asking what effect would disabling the governor have on your car? Increased power? More pollution? Engine blow up? You get the idea.
Thanks, Utnorris |
The governor also caps your speed on some cars. On my friends old GMC Jimmy, it was governed at 160, nothing to do with the RPM's since it was still well below redline. Removing the governor in this case would just allow you to push it closer to redline and also drive at a very unsafe speed, since the Jimmy is already floaty as is. More likely to lose control and roll over if you dont drive carefully.
The fit i dont think has a governor. Not even sure if it has a rev-limiter. Ive never hit either if it does have one or the other. Seems to be mostly american cars that have it. Though i know my moms toyota tacoma had a rev-limiter, since i hit a few times trying to peel out of her driveway in the snow. |
i think the fit has a limiter of some sort cuz i hit at 115mph at about 5500 rpm
|
and it wouldnt let me go any faster and sounded as if it was redlining
|
Governor will limit top speed. For example, one car (USDM Mercedes C 280 class) that had this installed to keep the cost per mile down (it was detailed in a back issue of The Star when the C came to the US market) so a lower speed rated tire could be used, thus replacement costs were lower. Diesel trucks will have them as pointed out, rental trucks will have them for liability, ditto on school buses (we removed one once, the difference was almost not worth it).
A rev limiter (which the Fit *may* have, never hit it myself) will prevent over-reving the motor during driving. |
i don't think it has a governor, but it does have a rev limiter, i've hit it at the track a couple of times

The fit DEFINITELY has a speed governor at 115 mph.
I was at 5500 RPM, and I hit something that felt EXACTLY like a rev limiter. Keep in mind, this was an EMPTY road with NO OTHER CARS for miles. Northern Michigan ftw! Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I just wanted to point that out. |

speed!
i've pushed mine to 115 BAS. (bone-ass-stock)
it does have a speed cap on it. anyone know how to pull that? |
i've hit 100 in it...and it had plenty of pep left...i might just go do 115 to see what you guys are talking about :-p
<---lives around some VERY empty roads...with no one to hurt buy myself <---is joking anyways |
i topped out my car at 120 mph. here is a pic of it.MySpace
|
That's odd...I've had my USDM Fit at 125 and didn't hit a speed limiter...Which the Dunlop tires that came with the car were rated at 120, so I would assume that's where the limiter would have been. Maybe it had them at first in the USDM models, but it was a mid-year change to have it taken off?

Sorry, zombied this thread. :)
|
How the hell did you hit 125? Mine makes it to 117ish and then the fuel cutoff kicks in like a little bitch.

Silly ricers.
|
*Shrug.* I'm not entirely sure how I did it myself, but I just held my foot down and it climbed to 120 and I was waiting for it to kick off, but it kept going...maybe it's because I don't have TPMS sensors?
