Muffler delete straight pipe

Well I got sick of waiting for the RCAutowerks axle-back, and I figure the price for what it is would probably be crazy. So I decided to get something custom done. Went down to this welder's shop that my brother knows. He agreed to make something up for me if I got all the materials. Went to the autoparts store and got an increaser and 3 feet of 2" piping and a subtle stainless tip. I wanted to use a flange so that I would be able to take it off in the future but we didn't have anything to fabricate one so we used the OEM muffler I had. Kept the oem piping from the flange to right before it enters the muffler so we wouldn't have to bend new pipe, welded on an 1.5" to 2" increaser and used about 1.5' of the straight pipe. Total parts = $28, welder's fee = $11 for a 12pack. Only downside is if I ever wanted to go back to the OEM muffler I'd either have to saw off the original piece from this and weld it back to the muffler or buy a new muffler for $90 at collegehills.

It's not much louder than my megan racing axle-back, a little more "droney" between 2000 and 2500 RPM. But the growl with the weapon*r street headers and the SRI is AMAZING.

Here's some pics:

Very nice. I thought about doing this before I got my megan axleback but I am happy with my megan axle back and everything is good now :)

I was happy with the sound of the megan axle back but I thought I would like it a bit quieter so I sold it. Was driving around with the OEM for about 2 weeks and it was just too quiet. Was thinking about getting another axle-back but this was 1/4 cheaper than getting another megan racing and 1/8th cheaper than the T1R 50s. Not sure how long I'll keep it though it's a bit too loud for my tastes, should tide me over until I can decide on a new axle-back to replace my sold megan.

get a Medallion Touring :)

looks good but im not a fan of loyudness. But that will be done when I put the Aspec Cat delete and Aspec B pipe.

Arisenfury 08-07-2008 09:46 PM

I was thinking about just getting the HFP muffler but damn is it expensive for no real gains. The T1R 50s looks promising since it's supposed to be really quiet but keep max flow. Surprisingly though with no muffler it's really not that loud, I'd put it at only a few more dB over my megan racing. Even my mom said it wasn't loud from outside the car lol.

junior40er 08-07-2008 10:41 PM

well, mufflers dont help much with gains IMO. Maybe a couple HP if you upgrade the rest of your pipes. I never really noticed any gains in the past but maybe its just me.

Arisenfury 08-07-2008 10:44 PM

I've noticed a difference with no muffler, it pulls great the last 1000 rpm before redline. I never noticed much with the axle-backs though.

SD_MR_FIT 08-07-2008 11:54 PM

its really not that loud.

i feel a difference running no muffler when im at full throttle.

like 1st-4th gear all the way up to redline is nicer.

Arisenfury 08-08-2008 12:12 AM

You've been running no muffler?

GD3-Fit 08-08-2008 08:52 AM

ya just take it off....
that's what i've been doing up until i got my spoon exhaust

Surprising to me was when I put the straight pipe in, it got louder than when I just let it exit behind the wheel. I figured it'd be quieter since it wouldn't be exiting from under the car.

I did this exact same thing yesterday morning. I was just tired of waiting for a production one. So I had my friend weld it up for me, we spent the morning fabbing it up since I used a flange from an old axle back for my civic coupe. Cost me 18 bucks for some 2.25 steel piping and that's it. I just got bored with the car being too quiet. I did this just for shits and giggles. Later down the line I'll probably purchase an OEM EP3 muffler. But for right now it sounds good, except for the droning at times.

Arisenfury 08-11-2008 12:55 AM

Yeah that's my only gripe with it. At 2000rpm is drones like a mofo, but it's not terribly loud. I had it on the highway for the first time today and at 65mph it was almost silent, I had a little 85mph spirt and even then it was still rather quiet.

PowerHungryFIT 07-18-2011 11:02 PM

i just did the muffler delete, very happy. to describe the sound level: i have the sid SSR and the intake is louder in the cabin than the exhaust although still audible and very rich in tone. Sid's SSR + muffler delete = quicker fit :o)

i had megan exhaust at first, but i got bored.

Texas Coyote 10-04-2011 01:22 AM

Between 3000 RPM and 4200 RPM on the highway the exhaust noise becomes stressful, so I close the exhaust control valve to avoid going crazy.... These cars are very loud without a catalytic converter.

sonicbob - can you provide details on your exhaust setup? It looks really clean n simple. Any chance you can post a sound slip or video? - Thanks man
