Fit Been Sitting For 3 Years
 

Hey I have a Honda fit that has been in storage for about 3 years, what steps do you think I should do to get it running and smogged in CA?

1) Change the oil
2) Change the gasoline
3) Run some 91 octane Chevron with techron
4) maybe consider running some sea foam through the intake manifold
5) change plugs
6) drive it around a bit
7) get the engine good and hot on the way to the smog shop, run the piss out of it.

-check battery
-is battery dead?
-if yes, replace battery

-check tires
-are the tires low on air?
-if yes, add air to tires

-drive to smog shop, and pass

That's about it.

Maybe the gasoline could have gone bad with all the ethanol in it but I wouldn't do anything about it unless it fails smog.

When I start engines that have been in storage, I pull the plugs, and put a oz of 0 weight oil ,
or some marvel mystery oil. Spin the motor over with the plugs out. Let sit overnight if possible.
reinstall plugs and start. It will puff white smoke if you use the mystery oil, gray or black if you use the 30 wt.
It will smoke a LOT :) for about a minute.

I do this to lubricate the rings, the most common glitch in a stored car is the rings stick in the grooves of the pistons,
(Aluminum and steel you get some galvanic action at times)

For those born later.. ;) Seafoam was originally sold as whats called a Fogging Oil in the marine industry.
We used to run the engine at idle and spray seafoam in the intake till it basically fouled out the plugs and
stalled motor. Then you left it till the next season. To "un-pickle" the motor we wold pull plugs, spin , install new plugs and fire it up.

Marvel mystery oil was originally put in a tank on old tractors that had "Marvel" carburetors on them,
these old tractors also had steam lines off the radiator that fed in to the intake of the engine,
When plowing , for extra torque you'd open the steam valve. The Marvel oil kept the top end of the old flathead
tractor motor lubricated so the valves and rings would not rust, these old tractors also often had cast iron pistons
so when you turned them off it was important to lube the cylinders if you'd been running the steam, we would use
the marvel oil for that too. Pull plugs ,, pour a couple ounces in each jug turn the motor over , put the plugs back in and
leave it till you needed it next.

I've used both products to restart equipment thats been parked for over 50 years and had them fire right up.
The mystery oil is better for the purpose of trying to unstick a old tractor or diesel..
