or is buying one the only way to go?

yeah I believe this have been discussed a bunch before, if you weed through the listings in a search you should come up with a bunch of stuff

yea, i used the oem bracket and turned it upside down. then drilled holes in the top of the plastic lower grill insert and connected it. kind of a cramped space but looks way better than stock.

I did the same but instead of drilling holes into the grill insert, I used the original location. I cut my tabs so that I can angle it in the original location. I can take pictures on how it looks if anyone is interested.

this is how mine is relocated. stock bracket.

saw someone's mini cooper using a long stud screwed into the tow hook area, with a few bolts as spacers and a home made bracket to screw the license plate on.

*FitFreak nor myself are responsible for any mistakes if anything happens while following this guide.

*First start by removing your license plate off
(since I already did this I don't have any pictures of how the original looks like)

*Remove the license plates off the holder

*Next your going to need something to cut some plastic pieces off. Once you found something to cut with start cut on the inside of the wall were the bolt hole is. Its the one in the angled, I made a rough sketch on were to cut:

So your basically cutting a triangle and you want to do this for the other side as well so you get a tab. Once your all done it should look like this:

*Once both sides are free start bending it the opposite direction. It might take awhile since its hard plastic. Be sure to be careful not to over do it and snap the tab off. I had a difficult time bending it in the right angle the first time. This is how it should look like once its all done:

*Extra if you have any extra foam laying around I cut a piece to fit on the bottom of the license plate for extra protection.

*Now the semi hard part putting it back in. Your going to need a long extension to reach the bolt now that the license plate is flipped. You might have to play with the angle of the tab to screw the bolt


down, once you are able to get the screw in the hole tighten it so there alittle play so you can get the other side on

*Now put back your license plate and your set to go.

^i did the exact same thing as that this weekend....i didnt evne know it was on the forum. except that i used a foam tape on the bottom part of the bracket.

its looks much better in the lower grille area rather than blocking the painted bumper.

Dont forget it also beats paying for a relocating plate... heehee...

go to home depot grab yourself some 90 degree bent metal brackets with areas to put screws in.

grab some self tapping screws. and wala you got yourself a re locater kit for 1.33 including tax.

ill get pictures up for the brackets later.

and you dont have to remove the bumper for this application.

which ever one you choose, it does the same thing.

20 bones for a piece of metal/plastic with screws.

honestly i havnt
works been keeping me very busy and the weather has been less than cooperative (i dont have a garage)
not to mention im still debating on weather or not to just flip the stock bracket like one poster had done or use angle-iron to make it

it sucks that the two fastening holes are angled so it makes it a little difficult to try to do something simple and i deffintatly dont want to drill any new holes out of fear of jackin up my front bumper.

alhtough i did finaly yellow-out my fog lights, but thats for another thread.

how/where did you end up bolting that, if thats the stock bracket??

alright alright. i finally got ALL the info you need for the DIY CHEAP broke still looking the same like all the other expensive kits License plate relocation kit.:)

this kit should go for 1.33 but it may cost a little bit more depending on if you want gold color or not. heh

no more then 2 bucks.



go to home depot or your local hardware store. walk to the mill section.

then look for the roof truss clip(should be 42 cents at home depot)
get the single truss clip. if it is a simpson strong tie brand, get model stc-r.

if they dont have what im talking about. just ask them for a 90 degree bent bracket with a slot in the middle for moving the screw up and down on one side.


now, you get #8-32 x 1/2" stanless steel cap screw to hold you license plate onto the bracket. (2 quantity)

then you get the #8x1" self tapping screws(4 quantity)

so now you have all your parts.


take a look at the bracket, and you will see that on one of the sides it has a slot were you can move the cap screw up and down. that will be your license plate mounting face. where as on the top it will have 2 holes to put your self taping screws in.


everything should be common sense from there
you will be install this kit...along under the bumer above the lower grill.


.put the plate on the brackets...screw it on. put it where ever you want on your car....take a sharpie and make two dots on where your self tapping screws are located. then take off the bracket so you can make the holes....and then put your kit on.


and this is how it turns out. well it also depends where you are going to put it on too.

we have license plate relocators available

well. just think about it this way.

you spend say 20 bucks on a OFFICIAL license plate reallocator kit.

just say i spent 2 bucks. which i only spent remember 1.33.

with the extra money i saved. i could buy my self lunch at in n out, get me a squash air freshner with the case and still have some change left.

it all does the same purpose. why not save yourself some money.

and if you dont like the silver for 99 cents more. you can get the flatblack spray paint they have at home depot and paint it.
