finally got home after a short but LONG biz trip. meetings went well but between meetings i kept getting those WTF-MANG-people-are-so-faking-stupid kinda emails. insult to injury, had to drive some pos kia mini suv called stupage or something the rental place gave me..lol

wife picked me up at the airport in her GK, stopped by our usual mexican place for supper... super burrito VERY tasty.

waz so happy to see my GTI when i got home.

 

A rental car sounds nice.

Driving my Fit wears me out, I'm too young to be this old & cranky.

 

what i like about rental places is i drive cars i will never buy. it's good to have that knowledge what people are actually driving as their regular dd's.. and to know how horrible some of these cars are.

but then again as u stated mike, GK isn't too far off either. i think it's the other cars we have that spoils us. expectations are much higher having the knowledge how great cars can be.

 

i mean i've realized how advanced DSG is vs conventional AT and cvt.. even though i hate AT's in general there is no comparison. dual clutch > torque converter any day.

 

menu for the day.. taking the GTI to work for a relaxing drive, dropping off some clothes at the dry cleaner this am along the way. cant remember if i had any more big meeting this week but im down for a relaxing rest of the week into 3 day weekend.

3 Day weekend is magical.

Agreed on torque converter vs dual clutch. An ISF drove by me yesterday morning & while the engine sounds great, the sad torque converter upshifts just totally kill the enjoyment.

 

oh u like the GTI fart sound at wot.

 

I guess I'm weird, but I like the flexibility that a torque converter adds to the auto.

Test drove a GTI with the DSG and it was one of the worst behaving automatics I had ever experienced (second worst to the Ford Focus clutch style auto). Low speed lunges and lurches were just way too much drama for me when just trying to inch along in traffic. That was in 2015, so maybe they've made improvements. It conducted flawless upshifts and downshifts at speed and especially when under throttle, but it's low speed traffic and parking lot manners were horrible. It was also a brand new car so maybe they get better with some miles?

I think it really comes down to the reason you're picking an automatic. For me, I want an auto to be smooth and allow for mindless operation. Otherwise, just give me a manual that's more engaging and enjoyable.

Edited to add...That's if picking a street car. The dual clutch auto's dominate most forms of racing and do have their place.

Loved the car otherwise. I'm not the only one that feels that way about VW's DSG's, but they may have improved since my test drive. Better programming could have been adapted since then.

u sure have a lot of time on your hands to want to insult my car. lol and this coming from a regular Golf owner is pretty jelly sounding.

 

i've driven many different cars including very expensive ones to exotics to cheepos.

i will say that the DSG is a smooth shifting gearbox and throttle response is superb. but there is a slight learning curve to drive it. it is closer to a manual as far as throttle control than a mush torque converter for the numb and dumb footed.

 

i showed this thread to a mk6 GTI owner with DSG and he lol'ed. his GTI is smooth too and agreed you probably need more time behind the wheel to get familiar with the throttle control.

 

Wow! Can't imagine why you'd take that as a personal insult? Every car has plus and minuses.

The DSG is flawless in so many ways and the car is brilliant. Low speed manners just isn't one of them. Everyone at our VW dealer agreed with my take on it at the time and suggested that I should go for the manual if the jerkiness bothered me. Said their service department handles a lot of customer complaints and has to explain that the DSG operates that way.

It worked great provided I didn't have to back off the throttle on low speed acceleration. Like when the car in front of you puts on the brakes in stop and go traffic. Our VW dealership is in a heavily congested area so I probably experienced the worst scenario.

I just recognize the downsides to certain things. Auto's with torque converters are slower operating and have a less direct feel. Pluses and minuses. The slushbox in my car (yes, I call it that), is very smooth, but is slushy.

only downside to DSG is that it is boring to drive as with AT cars in general.
