so for fun i calculated how much i would save per year if i continue driving to work using only surface streets. minimum $700 savings. wow.

i used actual distance driven, tolls that i wont need to pay, mpg i was getting before vs now.

i wont, but if i used regular gas, that will equal over $1000 in savings. lol
wow, i can buy new tires every yr.

Curious how you got to that number?

Just to throw some numbers out there...

20 mpg
20,000 miles per year
equals 1000 gallons of fuel
$.60 difference (that's about the worst spread around here)
equals $600/year

That's with poor fuel economy and a fair amount of miles.

Using closer to national average numbers...

30 mpg
15,000 miles per year
equals 500 gallons of fuel
$.60 difference
equals $300/year

Those are per person, but I'm guessing your wife is already using 87 octane fuel, so you would be the only one that could save money.

Edit...I think I understand your numbers now! $700 plus the $300 would be $1,000?

Keep in mind that fuel economy drops with lower octane fuel if the car has to lower timing to accommodate for the lower octane.

A really good friend of mine is stupidly cheap. He had a 6-speed TSX and did a detailed study over about 20k miles. He found that the premium fuel paid for very close to half of it's cost by providing a slight improvement in fuel economy. It was interesting to me, but like you I didn't care. I just kept on pumping premium fuel into my indulgence based vehicles.

The unknown cost is windshield replacements. LOL

One or two chips/cracks could throw that highway trip into the really costly category!

Guess we need to factor in the curbs and potholes on the surface streets that could potentially take out some really nice wheels.

Owning and caring about cars certainly can get expensive!

oh mang, if i started including the potential damages on the expressway might as well just get a new car cause this car is for some reason an accident magnet, GAFIT..!

i think once we get out of the winterized gas the mpg on the GTI will improve another 2 (maybe 3) mpg.. i might be able to go 2 full wks without a fill.

im also trying to figure out if i want to drive a MT car to work everyday.. i have to say this week has been a very uneventful and very smooth riding and enjoyable commute. the stereo is just an absolute joy in the GTI and that super smooth shifting DSG is so oily good in full AT mode. im like give me back my 1.5yrs of ownership.. i want to start over and just get the DSG-R or S3 and drive the car stock..+DWS06's for winter. my GTI has lowering springs and for my commute i dont want a stiff ride..

alright found my shoes (for my feet) and should have it in my hands by saturday.

so another uneventful and boring yet relaxing drive to work this am.
i should maybe try different springs on my GTI.. emmanuel designs or watever makes some softer rate than the VWRacing springs i currently run. not super stiff by any means but could use a tad softer ride. but then too lazy to remove and reinstall so will probably just run the VWRacing springs lol.

Which is why i love my black on black on black Nike free runs I got at the Nike outlet for $40+tax.

I don't think I own a single all black shoe in all honesty.

Well, crap. I have a pair of black Nike Janoski max w/ white sole but I only use those for days with gross weather. Generally everything else I wear is quite light in color.

As seen:

on the way home stopped by the carwash place only to find they were closed.. wtf mang so faking lazy. was at 20F which is plenty of temp for those manned soft cloth places.

didnt feel like going home empty handed so got some gas. also did a quick wot run at the freeway entrance. felt good. felt right.
after getting gas, drove home like grandma..

oh yah, my wife bought me a new pair of BT headphones. its the audio66 bts pro.

going to use it while im out on the driveway washing my cars this Spring. it's a sports headset where the headband is replaced with a neckband and goes behind the neck vs over your head for a more secure fit. i had their previous model and it was good enough to go jogging with them on so should work fine.. and they are water/sweat resistant..and programmable via app

and i can take calls from my wife without pulling out my iphone with my dirty hands.. huge plus.
