Best Bike Rack

We have a 2017 Fit and want to purchase a trunk mount rack, the F4 Hollywood rack or something similar. Would anyone recommend this or a similar rack? Would anyone caution us against it? (It comes with a list of minivans and SUVs that are not compatible with the rack because it is a heavy duty rack and may be too heavy for some trunks.) Looking forward to your input, thank you.

Given the flimsiness of the Fit's hatch metal, I would not use a trunk-mount rack. The hatch feels like kleenex.

I'd suggest installing a hitch and using a hitch-mount rack.

I have this single bike rack and for the few times that I have used it, so far, so good. Haven't traveled more than about four 20 mile round trips.

I thru a hitch on from trailerjacks.com for $87 and have using this xport rack from performance bicycle for years as it light and cheap.

I purchased a hitch through eTrailer specifically to carry my bicycle(s).

The rack I use is a 1UpUsa single rack. It is expensive, but after trying several different manufacturers (Yak, Thule, Kuat) and styles (hanging, swinging, tray), I find this one to be my favorite. It can fold up and fit inside my Fit. It can expand to carry two or three bikes (the heavy duty version goes up to four bikes but you need a 2" receiver).

what brand of hitch did you get, and did you install it yourself?

I bought the Draw Tite sportframe class I hitch (1 1/4"). I do not see if on eTrailer's website anymore, but the installation procedure is generally the same - one style of hitch requires the bumper to be removed, the other requires some drilling/widening of a hole.

The hardest part of installing it on my own is balancing the weight. I ended up using a hydraulic jack with wood planks and some towels to help hold the hitch level/steady while I threaded the bolts on the other side. My version requires the exhaust to be lowered, but that is not a big hassle. If you have a second pair of hands, it helps immensely.

Do you have any issues with being on a hill with this type of hitch and the clearance?

Mueller747 01-11-2022 05:09 PM

Does the hitch mount present ground clearance problems when going up a hill, etc?
