Focal Q's

For the Focal components, does anyone know if all the different 6.5" drivers (Access, Polyglass, etc.) have the same mounting depth? I want to try some Polyglass V1s. I know people on this site have them and recommend them but exactly how difficult is it to make them fit. I really don't want to cut even the inside of the doors.

How are people mounting the Focal tweeters? Do you use the stock Fit Sport tweeter grills or surface mount them in that same location?

The V1 driver mounting depth is 2 11/16". Go to the Focal site for specs. Focal JMlab enceintes acoustiques haute fidélité haut-parleurs voiture audiomobile Car audio tuning

Some are using the stock tweeter grills with the TN52's (maybe the TNA's and 47's) by cutting away the surrounding plastic and hot gluing them in.

I prefer to do fewer modifications. I am installing my Focal's this week. I hope the flush mount pod works and looks good. We shall see... If not, I'll be firing up the glue gun!

Which Focals are you installing? Please post up some details about your install. Take pics if possible.

Mtra part # 82-7803 speaker spacers work amazing. Since Focal speakers are actually 6 3/4" all you need to do is buy those spacers and clip off the inner "tangs" for a completely trouble free install. Tweeters will fit in the oem tweeter location if you cut out the OEM tweeter bracket. Although it's not the greatest location for a tweeter by any means. It'll siffice unless you want to mount the tweets on the A-pillar above the useless window,

I'll be installing the 165 V1's later in the week. I will try to post some pics this weekend. Quetion for Injundon "Donald", My TNA's won't fit in the stock grills without cutting away the three plastic screw mounts. Am I then to glue the grills to the panel or is there another way to attach these?

Injundon Aug 25, 2008 10:49 PM

hot glue works wonders, or you can use dum-dum . You do have have to shave off the OEM tweeter junk from the grills though. to reinstall the OEm tweeters whe you trade up the car, just hot glue those into place.

Good info on the spacers. I didn't want to do any damage to the doors. Sounds like it takes a little cutting to get the tweeters in? I'm going with the stock location for maximum stealth.

I was going to go with the shallow mount Neo magnet CDTs that I have in another car. Do you guys think the Focals are worth the extra cost (and weight?...don't laugh but I'm paranoid about extra weight in the doors)

mrwilli1 Aug 25, 2008 11:47 PM

I honestly think the Focal's are lighter than most mid-bass drivers due to the fact that instead of metal cages, the Focals are fiberglass. I could not believe how light they were when I opened the box.

Injundon Aug 25, 2008 11:53 PM

Only the access are fiberglass..the rest are metal.

mrwilli1 Aug 25, 2008 11:59 PM

The Focal site lists the specs on the 165 V1 as:
6" Polyglass woofer
• Polyglass cone
• 80% ABS / 20% fiberglass basket
Am I missing something here?

neopolitian Aug 26, 2008 12:08 AM

On the subject of Focals, where are you guys buying them? Is there a reputable place online with decent prices?

Ooh, I like the light weight. You would not believe how light the CDT neo magnet speakers are even with a metal frame.

mrwilli1 Aug 26, 2008 12:17 AM

I have one local high end shop in San Jose that carries Focal speakers. I have seen them on e-Bay as well as Woofers etc on the net.

Injundon Aug 26, 2008 08:39 PM

online woofersetc.com Ebay avoid like the plague since the malaysians sell focal knock-offs. All the looks NONE of the quality

mrwilli1 Aug 26, 2008 11:23 PM

So how does one tell the difference between the knock-offs and the real thing?

Injundon Aug 27, 2008 08:11 AM

the tweeers look very different. They use low quality parts in the crossovers. You can rub the coating off the speaker basket with your thumb. In the case of polykevlars (Kf,Kp,Kps, k2p's you can see through the cone with the knock-offs.

neopolitian Aug 27, 2008 11:09 AM

Yeah, on the Focal usa page it says the Polyglass frames are made out of the same stuff as the Access. I'm still worried about the tweeter install.

I'm going with woofersect and I better be getting the real thing.

K2Ps

I have a pair of Focal K2Ps in my Toyota Solara and I absolutely love them. I ran an amp to them and took all the rest of my speakers out of my car and you can not tell it is all that is in that car. I sold the rest. They are amazing if you close your eyes you could never point to where the speakers are. Heres there site too: Focal JMlab enceintes acoustiques haute fidélité haut-parleurs voiture audiomobile Car audio tuning .

soulcontrol Aug 29, 2008 09:27 PM

Sorry Mrwill just saw that you had already posted that.

radareclipse Aug 29, 2008 11:32 PM

Buy from woofers etc, expect warranty issues if you blow them. See the local guy and see if he is willing to work with you.

neopolitian Sep 1, 2008 12:51 AM

mrwilli, did get the focals installed yet? I want more details about how awesome they are. (and any install probs)
