The Ultimate Honda Fit Bike Rack
 

I made this bike rack for our Fit. It holds two bikes and secures both nicely. Check it out:

When we are traveling without bikes we just lift the bike rack out. It works great! What do your think?

if you are either 12 or ride a bmx bike everywhere... yeah thatd work.. but i dont.

That's a nice design and a great idea. I have a similar setup on a 2x4, but I load my bike in rear wheel first. It's easier for me that way.

It also fits other bikes, you can't really see from this picture but there is a lot of room behind the BMX bike. Don't knock BMX, didn't you watch the Olympics? Those guys aren't 12.

Here is a few more pictures that show the extra room behind the bikes. The 24" bike on the right has the same wheelbase as most mountain and road bikes. The mounts also could have been installed closer to the front seats for longer bikes.

thats cool, but bmx bikes are tiny. i have road bikes that are WAY too big to fit in the hatch like that. thats why i have a hitch and rack

My dad has a road bike and it actually has a shorter wheelbase than the 24" BMX bike. From the front axle mount to the tip of the rear wheel the 24" bike measures 50 inches. The 20" BMX bike measures 45", it is an adult size Pro XL BMX bike, not a kids bike. What are the measurements on the road bikes?

How does that effect your gas mileage? My dad has a Prius which gets 45+ freeway and when he puts the hitch rack on the back he gets 32 MPG. I was laughing because I spent 10 grand less on the Fit and can get 37 freeway with bikes.

i get 45+mpg without the rack, and 45+mpg with the rack.

I'm curious to find out the measurements of other bikes to see if all bikes will fit the rack...

a road bike w/o the front wheel wont sit like that. itll sit different. the bars will go much further. ive had road bikes in my car before, but they were laying flat w/ front wheel removed and they were hard to fit in there.

Well mountain bikes will fit, I will try to put my dads road bike in next time I go to AZ.

If I back my mountain bike straight in with the handle bars touching the rear glass, the rear wheel will go pass the seat backs. It should be possible to mount the fork facing forward like your set up and the rest of the bike at a diagonal.

thats a nice bmx bike....nice to see another rider on the boards, granted i havent actually ridden in awhile.

does the fact that you have the bike mount holder 'hooked' over the seats (L-shaped) make it so that the bikes don't move or fall over or tilt when you take corners or rough roads? Just trying to get a sense of why you have the L-shape design of your rack? Thanks for the input. I like the idea.

Yes, with the L shape if you were to accelerate hard or go up a steep hill the bikes will be prevented from sliding backward. I also used non slip furniture pads on the underside so the bikes can't move left or right. The rack stays in place even on hard corners. I like that when I go in a restaurant the bikes are locked safely in the car.

wow that sprocket is tiny what are using it for?

That sprocket is a 25 and the rear is a 9. It is actually the same gear ratio as a 44-16. It pedals like a standard size sprocket. I use it for skate parks and dirt jumping.
