So you want bass with little space?
 

I have heard this time and time again on this forum. Well my wife just got a new car, well its not brand new or a fit but she also didn't want to lose a ton of space in her hatch area. So I came up with this, it's a small ported box, measuring 20"x10"x8". Made from 1/2" MDF, tuned at 40Hz and the box weighs around 10lbs maybe a bit less. The woofer will be a single 8" sub, which weighs around 2lbs.

So here are some pictures of this raw, I am going to put a coat of paint on it to match the car once the sub arrives tomorrow.

So for the application this will be pretty successful taking up minimal space, not weighing a ton and still delivering good bass response.

curious to know what kind of sub u plan on putting in there?

It's a single 8", a generic from ebay that I got cheap. Although it could take pretty much any 8" sub as long as it doesn't have a huge motor since the box is only 8" deep total.

Well I don't know if it will fit under the back seat, possible but not sure. Junkie PM me we can talk, it's not gonna be earth shattering bass, but it will provide the lower end fill that all cars lack.

i assume the internal volume and tuning are matched to the sub specs? i mean you can't really just build the same box for others and have them put whatever sub they want in it of course.
Is that a BP box, ported or a T-line??

Actually with an L port design the box can be used for most subs out there, when you are trying to squeeze decibels or peak frequencies then I would build the box around the sub. To answer your last question, it's a simple L shape ported enclosure, not a bandpass or T line.

U just painted it ? I like it alot ! Next best thing compared to a stealth box!!! How does it sound?

Not sure on sound yet, i will do some sound testing tomorrow or saturday. Paint was used instead of carpet as it was on hand and the paint was matched to the color of the car per her request.

L port or round port..that actually has nothing to do with it. Port design is about velocity and tuning. Generally for preventing turbulence and port compression is to design for a max velocity of 5% of the speed of sound, or about 17 meters per second (~55 feet/sec).

provided its large enough, you can use a range of sub specs for it, although i'd suggest for 40hz you use a subsonic filter of close to 38 hz at least so the sub wont' unload. You don't want too large or too small for any particular sub.

regardless, the box is of #1 importance, not the sub.

This is a Low wattage economy application, where even below tuning the sub will not be getting enough power to unload enough to start self destructing. As for the manufacturer recommended enclosures those are generic in a sense of they are a general use application in mind. Only certain manufacturers provide a variety of enclosure types (sq/spl/sqspl) and even then that is a in lab measurement, everything in car is different due to many factors.

We could go back and forth on things you know Vs what I know and still not be on topic here. This box was designed for exactly it's own purpose and that is small, economic and yet still deliver some bass.

So the economy build wasn't enough bass for the wife, I kinda had a feeling it wouldn't be. Well I worked a trade got a very nice Sundown SA8 for her and also got a MTX 400watt mono block amp. And today I built this box for it, measurements are 18"Wx14"Hx14"D. So again a pretty small enclosure but still netting around 1cuft after 45 braces and sub displacement, tuning is 37Hz.

The SA 8's are awesome!!! One 8 on 400 there will rock the car

Oh I know, I have a single SA12 in my fit on 1400watts ported and tuned at 32Hz :D
