calling fellow 17" riders for advise
 

Hi all,

I've received my 17" last week and have it on my car over the weekend. my problem is that it vibrate when I go over 60 mph. I went to Mr. Tires to have it balance and it did improved, but now when I goes over 70 MPH it start to vibrate again. When back to Mr. Tires and ask them look at it, they perform alignment ( don't ask me why, alignment does cause vibration and it was so little). And still vibrate, the guys at Mr. Tires said that because Fit are so light and I have the low profile tires on that's way the car vibrate at high speed. Does this sound right? I also notice that I loose about 2 mpg in average.

Im in no means an expert but the vibration sounds like something is not balanced properly. Id try to get a second opinion as the tire shop either doesnt know how to fix the problem or maybe their own calibration device might be off and they are not aware of it, resulting in unbalanced tires.

As for the mpg, larger wheels bring larger mass to rotate, with contribute to mpg loss.

Sounds like BS story from the shop to me, I run 17's with low profiles and my car is as smooth as silk at high speeds.

I would say if they are making up some story like that they probably have one of those crappy balancing machines that are from the 60's that does a sh!ty job. Go somewhere else! :D

Hey I have 18's and I mounted and balanced my tires with my pops (whos a master tech and has been doin it going on 30 yrs now) and I have a vibration at about 70 so it happens but then again I'm runnin 18's:D

That is weird, I don't get any viberations at all, even at those speeds.

Then again, I get my tires mounted and balanced at a specialty tire shop that has the same tire balancing equipment that you would expect see on the floor of a Ferrari shop. Nothing but the best for my baby :)

im running 17's and yeah it is more sensitive to the floor since running on lower profile tires. but to sugarphreak, i bet he has some good tires :D im running 17s with cheap strata tires, so i bet its harder compound, rougher. i got 17s on strata tires right after replacing the OEM 15"s. so i do notice a big difference. my mini was running on low profile tires same as my fit, but that its dunlop and it is a lot smoother; softer compound.

on the mpg, local i believe would lose a bit more gas, just as said, its more to rotate, but if your a freeway person like me, then it saves A LOT more.

try rebalancing the wheels at another shop(not pepboys!)

i get slight vibrations when im driving above 80mph...around 70 should be smooth...im not sure what it is...maybe the tires arent inflated enough

i have to wait for my next payday, i ran our of money...

I had the same problem with 17s over 70 mph, so I took the wheels off till I could buy 15s and figure out why the 17s are vibrating, heres what Ive been told, we need hubcentric rings to better center the wheel on the hubs or spindle, I really dont know if this is true, I have seen some wheels for sale that came with the rings, maybe I will check with tirerack and see what they say. check out 1010tires.com they carry the rings Im talking about.

This is true also, my rims came with plastic rings that need to be mounted before the rims go on. I didn't even consider that when I first read the post. For sure you will get some vibration if you don't have those rings installed unless your rim mounts up flush with the hub. I will try to take some pics of the rings when I got home today.

yes... you need the centering rings so it stops the vibration. It should not have to anything with your alignment. I think you need to get the right center bore and wheel bore ring and it will all stop.

yeah...hub centric rings are what you are looking for.

btw, what wheels did you get and what lug nuts are you using? you aren't using the honda factory lug nuts are you?

They did gave me the ring, I had no idea what its for so I did not give to the shop. I'll have to swing by and give it to them to install for me now...:p

all you do to put them on is remove your wheel and pop them on the back of the wheels in the center. This will stop it from vibrating.
They should know how to pop it on.

do u know what the hub centric ring diameter sizes are for the outside and the inside sizes? someone suggested that for 17x7 rims are 73 mm outside and 56.1 mm for the inside, is this correct?
