Your Fit is black - so you can really do whatever you like with your wheels and it will look fine with the color of your car. If you've got the cash laying around and they are your track wheels, why not have a little fun with them?

dewthedew Mar 29, 2010 11:39 AM

ummm yess why the hell not!!!!

Hobbaswaggle Mar 29, 2010 12:45 PM

I've been thinking of doing this on my TW

i'll actually coat them myself,so no expense there other than the color.

If you like the color, go for it.

DreaMv Mar 29, 2010 01:08 PM

do not powder coat wheels it will weaken the metal. just spray them yourself.

How does it weaken them?

kelsodeez Mar 29, 2010 05:12 PM

the powdercoat itself will not weaken the wheel, the heat and the process of stripping the wheel to get it to bare metal will. regardless, i am a strong advocate of safety and i would powdercoat my own wheels so dont worry about it.
also, that color is hotter than the sun! i vote yes esp. since they are on rpf1's.

k20a298ek Mar 29, 2010 05:55 PM

it is actualy the heat that can warp and weaken the metal.

Yeah i just used aerosol paint stripper and a scrub brush and it got all the paint off the first one.

lol rota

350 degrees for 20 minutes isnt that bad, but i guess if you have bubbles in your casting like rotas do, then it may make more of a difference. the way that rpf1's are made, they spin the casting while its still liquid to give the metal consistency.heat wont be an issue. if your wheels are forged, heat is not a problem at all.

bottom line, if you buy shitty wheels and try to powder coat them, well, thats like putting lipstick on a pig.

yeah thats what i figured you were talking about.i figure if the heat is low enough they should be fine.i will definetly check the roll out of each rim afterwards though.

okay well, the bottom line is that any aluminum part will lose integrity after 400 degrees. if you keep the oven between 350-375, there is little to no danger in powder coating a wheel. coming from a guy that has powder coated over 30 sets of wheels and never had anyone damage a wheel after the fact.

k20a298ek Mar 29, 2010 06:30 PM

do a google search on it. alot of people have had the same problems with powder coating wheels. most people get wheels painted rather than powder coated.

if he has done over 30 sets of wheels and has first hand experience on the powdercoating, why would he have to look on google where people didnt do it right or were careless and had the over too high.

Most wheels are powder coated from the factory, it's more durable than painting especially with the water based eco freindly paint we have now.
